Singer\/songwriter James Passey<\/strong> reveals a Karl Wallinger<\/strong> collaboration to Andy Rawll <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Passey has been turning heads and opening ears since the release of his solo debut Leave This World Behind<\/em> in 2019. An evocative storyteller in the style of the troubadours of yore, his pristine songcraft and soulful delivery have garnered increasing recognition with each subsequent release. Indeed, producer Chris Kimsey (The Rolling Stones) cast his sonic spell over an expanded version of She Don\u2019t Call, having been enticed by the strength of the original demo (see https:\/\/siteproxy.ruqli.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.youtube.com\/@jamespassey592\/videos<\/a>). Yet, it was Passey\u2019s unique collaboration with the much-missed Karl Wallinger that the songwriter cherishes the most to this day.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Introduced through a mutual acquaintance and former Waterboy, Martyn Swain<\/strong>, who was working at Wallinger\u2019s Seaview studio alongside Sussex coast neighbour, Kevin Armstrong<\/strong> (David Bowie), Karl listened to Passey\u2019s songs and agreed to summon some seaside sorcery for the track, Empires, built upon a guitar and vocal track originally recorded as an iPhone VoiceNote memo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karl contributed contrapuntal piano lines that build Empires from a maudlin ballad into a deeply affecting elegy (see https:\/\/siteproxy.ruqli.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CP-8XnSQl50<\/a>). Despite the World Party leader\u2019s renewed appetite for composition, collaboration and performance after a long period of convalescence (2000-06), it\u2019s remarkable that there has been very little new music released since that time. Dumbing Up<\/em>, World Party\u2019s fifth and final studio album, was issued in 2000. The praised collaboration with Peter Gabriel, Burn You Up, Burn You Down, was in 2003, though the composition and original recording sessions at Real World Studios date back to the early 90s (see https:\/\/siteproxy.ruqli.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.worldparty.net\/<\/a>). Of the 70 tracks included on World Party\u2019s 2012\u2019s expansive Arkeology<\/em>, only four (Words, Everybody\u2019s Falling In Love, Photograph, Waiting Such A Long Time) date from 2006-12. As such, James Passey\u2019s Empires remains a treasured commodity, as one of the very few released studio performances by Wallinger in recent times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its writer revealed, \u201c<\/em>I was very honoured that Karl played piano on a track of mine. I was absolutely blown away with what he came up with. A truly genius musician and songwriter, a visionary. RIP, Karl. Thanks for all the music and for making one of this songwriter\u2019s dreams come true\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RC<\/em> is aware of only one other released performance by Karl since that period, contributing elegant piano and strings to the track Hurts So Bad, on Kevin Armstrong\u2019s recently released second solo album, Orphans<\/em> (https:\/\/siteproxy.ruqli.workers.dev:443\/https\/www.kevin-armstrong.com\/<\/a> and https:\/\/siteproxy.ruqli.workers.dev:443\/https\/kevinarmstrong1.bandcamp.com\/album\/orphans-2<\/a>). In March 2024, during what proved to be his final interview before his untimely death, Karl revealed to News Reel<\/em>\u2019s Andrew Buncombe that he was close to breaking musical silence with a new solo release. It remains to be seen whether and when that work or any of his large accumulated archive of songs will see the light of day. On 25 October 2026, a special memorial concert \u201ccelebrating the music of World Party frontman and revered songwriter Karl Wallinger\u201d is scheduled at London Shepherd\u2019s Bush O2<\/sub> Empire. The tribute is set to feature guest musicians performing alternative pop hits and deep cuts from the World Party catalogue. These are the same protagonists that Karl hoped to enlist to complete his long gestating new album. Perhaps, this much-anticipated event will prove to be the catalyst for that potential release. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
