Standing at a dark lectern lit by candles, he shared chapters from his life, treating the stage with a sense of old-school showmanship and openly exploring the contrast between his real life and his theatrical character. Celebrating the release of his definitive memoir, Devil On My Shoulder, Cooper treated fans to an intimate two-hour stripped-back look at the man behind the make-up.

Joining him was iconic psychedelic rock and theatrical pioneer, the “God of Hellfire,” Arthur Brown, and Alice’s co-author, journalist Daniel Richler, who hosted and helped the rocker dismantle decades of press stunts. “My manager Shep Gordon said that if he could just get us arrested, we’d at least get some publicity!”, Alice revealed. “We had someone make us some clear plastic suits, and we were naked underneath them. We’re on stage and playing and Shep calls the police himself, detailing how outraged he is. So, the police show up and, by that time, we’re into our fourth song and the heat of our bodies had fogged up the plastic suits. So, no one was seeing anything! A policeman said that he didn’t see anything wrong and so we didn’t get arrested! Shep said that we were impossible to get arrested in that town!”, Cooper laughed, cheerfully admitting that Shep operated on the basis of one simple golden rule: If the media invents a crazy story about you, never deny it – especially if it involves a chicken!

“The chicken story is one of my favourites, actually,” Alice reflected, “because it brought Alice Cooper into focus!” Prompted by Richler to share the story, Alice recounted, “we were playing at the Toronto peace festival in front of 30,000 people, and we were going on between The Doors and John and Yoko’s first performance. At the end of the show, we opened up these two feather pillows, which would fill this room and look like a snowstorm. Then you hit the strobe lights and everyone is going crazy. The music is on, white noise, and I look down and there’s a chicken. I didn’t bring the chicken. I’m from Detroit. I’ve never been on a farm in my life. Anyway, it had feathers, wings, it should fly, so I picked it up and I tossed it into the crowd. And chickens don’t fly so much as plummet! The audience tore it to pieces and threw the pieces back on stage! So, the next day in the paper: Alice Cooper Kills Chicken! Suddenly, I was the geek of rock’n’roll! Frank Zappa called me, as he was producing us at that time, and he asked, “did you kill a chicken on stage last night!?” I told him, “no!” He says, “well, don’t tell anybody. They love it!”

Cooper also extensively discussed his on-stage partner for the evening, Arthur Brown, who sat alongside him to help unpack their legendary encounters. “I’d just been flying to New York after doing five weeks’ in a row and not having much sleep,” said Arthur. “I came out of the plane and into the theatre and there was a nice big stage and a trap door at the back. I went in and got dressed into my stage costume and then realised that I was very tired. The Who’s manager, Chris Stamp, said to me, “you look troubled, Arthur,” then went over to the drawers in his hotel room, pulled out a little box and out of it pulled a black tablet. He told me to take the pill and that I’d perform like an angel. I went on stage and started, and the band were playing quite loud by the third song. Next thing that I knew, the sound was coming from about a mile away and it felt like I was in a strange place. It was all dark, except the light you could see from the top of this hole that I’d fallen down, because somebody had left the trap door open. With Keith Moon’s pill, I was going full speed all over the stage!”

After shouting out the name “Dorchester,” a silent hunchback assistant rushed onto the stage to turn the pages of Alice’s book, before Cooper stood at the lectern and began to read excerpts from his book: “Our show was a morality play with a rock’n’roll twist,” he concluded, before leaving for the Interval. In the second half of the evening, he started reading more excerpts: “For a long time, Shep, my manager, didn’t like me going public about my faith for fear of spoiling the Alice Cooper mystic, the brand. I got that. I know how people who hear about other rockers going to Christ roll their eyes. It’s like what George Harrison used to say, “if you say the word God or Lord, it makes some people’s hair curl. They feel threatened when you talk about something that just isn’t Be-Bop-A-Lula!”

Next, Alice welcomed on stage his wife of 50 years, Sheryl Cooper, whom he first met when she auditioned for the Welcome To My Nightmare tour. “Did you know we just got remarried!?”, she gushed. “After 50 years, three kids and five grandkids, it’s been a great ride. He taught me to appreciate the Grade-C horror movie, just the ridiculousness, and I got it. I got his sense of humour. I was besotted then and I still am. After 50 years, he still pursues me like I’m not already his!” The two shared a kiss and she exited, waving to the crowd.

An inquisitive Richler brought out Cooper’s iconic white top hat, opening things up to fans for a Q&A, and moving between laugh-out-loud vignettes. Cooper spoke honestly about his dark, blackout years, and didn’t glamourise the rock’n’roll lifestyle. Instead, he opened up deeply about his battles with alcoholism and drugs, and he discussed tales of mortality and lost friends. Even so, his comedy wasn’t far away: “We were not the terrors of the town. Bette Davis was! She owned a Jaguar XK-E and she’d drive it 100mph. Every once in a while, she’d drive up to the house that we rehearsed at, bang on the door and yell, “turn that damn music up!” I had a whole new respect for her at that point”.

In one particularly poignant moment, a fan asked Cooper about his unreleased DaDa LP and whether he’d ever be bringing it to the stage? “There are albums that I don’t remember doing in 1978, when there was cocaine everywhere. At that time, someone had the audacity to come up to me and say, “if you smoke it, it’s not as addictive!” It’s the most addictive thing on this planet, and most of my friends, I won’t name them, but you could pretty much guess who they were, were all into that. But I still wanted to do albums, because when you’re doing cocaine, you can rule the world. So, we made all these albums: Special Forces, Zipper Catches Skin and DaDa. I don’t remember any of it! But I listen to the songs now and I really like them, though the production is all over the place. Former Lee Warmer is the scariest song that we ever wrote, on that album. But there isn’t really any one of the songs that belong on the stage, unless we take Former Lee Warmer and turn that into an entire show!”

Cooper then described his songwriting dynamic with Elton John lyricist Bernie Taupin on From The Inside, after his stint at a New York asylum. “Bernie and I were best friends and, even before this, we were inseparable. When I got out, I called Bernie up and I told him that I had a plethora of characters that we had to talk about, including Nurse Rosetta, who Sheryl plays in the show. We talked through all these characters, then we just started writing. He’d try to end the line with a word that I couldn’t rhyme. But he was really fun to work with. I actually had dinner with him the other night. He’s still Bernie and I’m still Alice”.

Shifting back to classic rock’n’roll humour with the last top hat question of the night, a fan asked Cooper about a moment in his career that felt completely chaotic at the time but now makes him laugh? “The way we got our record contract with Frank Zappa was when we were playing the Lenny Bruce Memorial Birthday Party at the Cheetah Club in Los Angeles. There were 3,000 people. Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane were playing. Everyone was tripping and they were seeing rainbows and then we came on. We started out with Out In The Street by The Who and cleared the room in three songs! I mean they were plugging their ears and running for the doors because we were a bad trip. Frank Zappa heard about it and invited us over. So, we went and auditioned for him. He says, “I don’t get it!” I asked what he meant? “You’ve got six songs here that are two minutes long and there’s 25 changes that never go back to any other changes. I’m Frank Zappa, and I don’t get it! Of course, I want you on the label!”

On the last night of his UK Devil On My Shoulder book tour, Alice proved that he doesn’t need a roaring band, guillotine or a straightjacket to hold a room. Stripped of the theatrical illusion, the evening was a vulnerable masterclass in rock history, a devilish yet delicate dance between the onstage monster and the man behind the mask.

(Photo: Ian Bourn Photography )

See alicecooper.com.

Emmie MacNevin caught up with the godfather of shock rock, Alice Cooper, at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on 20 October

[20,8,16
["post-218457","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-live","category-news","category-reviews

Alice Cooper - shockingly good storyteller - Record Collector Magazine

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"Article","@id":"https://recordcollectormag.com/reviews/alice-cooper-shockingly-good-storyteller#article","isPartOf":{"@id":"https://recordcollectormag.com/reviews/alice-cooper-shockingly-good-storyteller"},"author":{"name":"Tim Jones","@id":"https://recordcollectormag.com/#/schema/person/5c3ecf7c02c3a3da7d2afdabdd8383c1"},"headline":"Alice Cooper –
