One mate was the drummer with Lene Lovich. There was Ted Emmett who played trumpet with Teardrop Explodes.”

Upstairs lived Paul Rogers, a double bassist who worked with British jazz greats Stan Tracy and Evan Parker. “I fell in love with this amazing creative music,” says Sanders, “I’d be going to all sorts of gigs all the time. Punk gigs at the Roundhouse. The Jam. Motorhead supporting the Damned – that was amazing.”

Sanders’ own first gigs were as part of a disco covers band alongside a bass-playing friend. “We did all the workingmen’s clubs up north. Three sets of ABBA a night. We went to Germany and played American Air Force bases. It was a good education.”

Back in London, enamoured by the emerging alternative rock sound of The Slits and Raincoats, Sanders put an ad in Melody Maker. “This guy called Simon Rose answered the ad. We started a band called Animal Answer, got a little deal with Bonaparte Records. We did the Woolwich Tramshed Battle Of The Bands and came second.”

Aged 20, Sanders began taking council-run evening classes in jazz in Brixton, run by trumpeter Brian Tueson. “He really helped me, and Paul Rogers introduced me to lots ofpeople.” Those people included reggae session musicians Tony Uta (Linton Kwesi Johnson) and saxophonist Michael ‘Bami’ Rose (Cymande / Aswad). “I was learning with great players.”

In 1978, Sanders unsuccessfully auditioned for Public Image Ltd. “It was between me and Jim Walker, who got the job. He’d just left Berklee. He was fantastic. I was just starting out.” Years later, the PiL connection would resurface, when Sanders began a long-time association with the band’s former bassist, Jah Wobble. Meanwhile, the drummer took afternoon classes in free improvisation with renowned violinist Philipp Wachsmann. There, he met Phil Durrant.

“He was playing electronics and violin. He suggested we run a regular gig as a duo, with a special guest each week.” Saxophonist Evan Parker was one of those guests. “He called me the next day for a gig. Then [saxophonist] Elton Dean called me and I joined his band. It was instant.”

Sanders’ web of connections grew, “There weren’t many young jazz drummers around, so I also got quite a bit of work playing in restaurants and bars, at the same time working with Evan Parker and [composer] Barry Guy. Then came the jazz boom.” The 1980s resurgence of the genre, fuelled by black British artists and centred in London, led to Sanders working with free jazz musician Jon Lloyd, and bassists Paul Rogers and John Edwards among many others.

Throughout the 90s, Sanders continued to record with Evan Parker and Elton Dean as well as composers Tim Richards and Simon H Fell, and pianist Veryan Weston. In 1996, the drummer worked with another great British improviser, Steve Beresford, on the latter’s albums Fish Of The Week and Cue Sheet, as well as playing on a session for David Sylvian.

“You have this sort of feast and famine, especially playing improvised music,” he says. “In the mid-90s, I was able to come off the dole. I started touring more high-profile gigs. I started working in Europe. I was getting calls from France and Germany. When EasyJet and Ryanair started, it was easier.”

The year 2000 saw Sanders first work alongside Jah Wobble, as part of the bassist’s Deep Space group on the album Beach Fervour Spare. The two met via mutual acquaintance and fellow Wobble collaborator, the specialist in Asian wind instruments, Clive Bell. “He [Bell] brought Wobble around to my place, we had a play, and that was it. I learned a lot from Wobble. He was great for long, improvised grooves, each lasting about half an hour.”

Sanders worked on 10 albums with Wobble over the next 10 years. That decade also saw him record with experimental composer John Wall, electronic duo Spring Heel Jack, the London Improvisers Orchestra, trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, Art Ensemble Of Chicago saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell and others. More recent entries to Sanders’ discography include records by bassist-composer Neil Charles, saxophonist Larry Stabbins (Working Week), and John Butcher.

In all, Sanders is credited on more than 200 recordings. His favourite moments? “Going with Wobble to Hiroshima in Japan and playing a sacred music festival, which the Dalai Lama had curated. It was Wobble’s band and a group of Laotian musicians [as featured on the album, Molam Dub, 2000]. It was a wonderful band, and an amazing experience.”

Working with free jazz saxophonist John Butcher is another highlight the drummer picks out. “John Butcher is a big part of my career. I’d wanted to play with him for so long. He had this project called Tarab Cuts with improvising and soloing. We went to Brazil, the USA and to Beirut, which was a wonderful experience.” Also: “lots of great gigs with Evan [Parker], playing with people like Harold Budd. Playing with [trumpeter] Wadada Leo Smith was always a joy and doing Glastonbury with [saxophonist] John Tchicai as a duo.”

Despite his impressive list of achievements, Sanders says he is still learning. “I’m always practising. I was up at six this morning to avoid the heat. I love working on possible new directions. I’ve tried sticking to one area but I really just love being versatile.”

Words: Chris Wheatley

Neil Charles, Cleveland Watkiss and Pat Thomas – Dark Days is on Jazz Now Records.

Born in 1960 in Beckenham, Kent, drummer Mark Sanders, who is of British-Belizean heritage, has rightfully earned a reputation as one of the best free jazz and free improvisation players around.
