It’s not the first time that I’ve played, as we recorded something a while ago with all the band, and that went terrifically well. It sounded great and I can’t wait to get that finished. But I’m a little bit nervous, because I’ve got to be on stage for the first time in a long time.

Colin: We’re really excited. It’s been really good fun in the past. We’ve done it a few times over the years and it’s just everything The Zombies for 72 hours. Friday night is a big 60s party and we’re meeting all the fans before that, Saturday is all sorts of talks and things for people to do, and it ends with a big show at St Albans Cathedral, where Rod will join me. On Sunday, there’s some wonderful things going on.

It’s special, isn’t it?

Colin: It is. From experience, I know people travel from all over the world for this weekend experience and it’s heart-warming that people are still interested in The Zombies, after starting in 1961. The first year that we did this weekend event, I thought, ‘a weekend of The Zombies? I’m not quite sure how I feel about this’. But I absolutely loved it. As a punter, I really enjoyed it. I just joined in on everything, and it was really good fun.

Does playing in St Albans feel like a full-circle moment?

Colin: There is an element of that, but we’ve done the Begin Here Festival before and played The Zombies songs. But we will be playing some that rarely get played, real deep cuts. It’s always very special when we go back to St Albans, because we all went to school there. We didn’t all live there, but that’s where we met and had our first rehearsal and that’s where the band developed.

Russ Ballard stepped into the fold after The Zombies initially parted ways. Having him join the celebrations feels like bringing the extended family back together.

Rod: It’s a terrific feeling and we usually get quite a lot of people attending from Japan, which is extraordinary.

Colin: I’m thrilled that Russ is going to come and play at the cathedral show. It’s something that I’ve never really told him, but I’ve always been a bit in awe of Russ. So, it’s always a special thrill for me to perform in a show with him and, in particular, to sing his wonderful song, I Don’t Believe In Miracles. It will be a very special experience.

The Continue Here collection of A-/B-sides has been described as “the album that never was,” bridging Begin Here (1964) and Odessey And Oracle (1967).

Rod: It’s a collection of a lot of singles that we did, and some of them, which Colin actually plays in his solo shows now, like Indication and She Does Everything For Me, are terrific songs. I went along to see Colin at a gig recently and those songs went down superbly. I don’t remember ever doing them live. I wrote Indication and She Does Everything To Me, and they’ve transferred to a live setting terrifically well.

Colin: Continue Here is an album of remastered mono versions of The Zombies tracks that never appeared on an album before. They’re 18 As and Bs that we recorded during those times. The idea was to put the collection together because those tracks have never been presented in this form. It’ll be the first time that people will hear them in original mono remastered on an album. It’ll be wonderful.

Rod: It’s a lot better than I imagined it would be. I think the mastering has been terrific. Rueben Cohen mastered it. He lives in the States and is a huge fan. He went back to the original tapes, and when I played it, it was almost like drawing the curtains away from these pieces, because they sounded so fresh. I loved hearing it and was really quite surprised.

Colin: I think it’s really brilliant, because there’s been two albums released already, Odessey And Oracle and Begin Here, and there are going to be four albums over 12 months. The fourth will be the tracks that were recorded after The Zombies finished and before Argent started. They’ll be released on Beechwood Park, which is The Zombies label. If we’d have gone back to 1967, when the band finished, and if you’d have told us then that there’d be this much interest in The Zombies now, I think most of us would’ve been a little bit surprised. It’s wonderful, because it makes you feel like it was all worthwhile.

This reissue series is overseen by Chris White’s sons, Mathew and Jamie White. What’s it like working with the next generation of The Zombies family?

Colin: It’s great. They’re very well informed and professional, have huge energy and commitment, and it’s wonderful to see the next generation coming through. Paul Atkinson’s daughter, Lucy, is a very successful music agent, and it’s wonderful to see the children succeed in the music business.

Continue Here is on LP and green LP.

Colin: It’s in four colours, including another colour from independent record stores.

Have you performed in many churches before?

Colin: We have. Rod and I played St Albans Cathedral four years ago. The first time that we played a venue like that was in Holland, at an evening festival. The promoter told us, “you’re playing in the big church!” We knew nothing about it. He just dumped us in a big church with a piano and we had to entertain 1,000 people. We had no idea what we were going to do. We hadn’t done it before, so we had a deep think about how the songs could be presented and it went really well. It was a little challenging, because we hadn’t rehearsed. We just had to go out there and do it. But after that, Rod and I did quite a lot of acoustic duo concerts and it seemed to go down really well. We’ve done a lot of them and always got a good response. I wish we’d done more. I didn’t write any of the songs, but you know it’s a good song when it’s just a piano and voice and it stands up. You take all the production values out of it. It’s just a performance and it sounds really good. That’s what I think shows that these songs do have value. No one in the 60s thought that they’d still be writing and recording in 2026. I’ve seen Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney saying that they thought they’d only have 3-4 year career. Everyone from that era tended to think that way and no one realised that you could have a lifetime career in the music business.

Do you keep the colour variants of your albums?

Colin: I don’t. I’m a very casual collector of records and listener to music. I tend to turn on or put on whatever’s there. But I know people who love that sort of thing. Because The Zombies aren’t playing anymore, I’m travelling as a solo band, and two or three of the guys collect and, the minute that we get into a town that we’re playing, they know where the local record shops are! Usually, you have to look these places up, because there’s not many left. But they know if there’s a record store in town and where it is. They know all about coloured variants, and what the desirable colours are, so I’m aware there are collectors of them out there.

Will the coloured variants be available over the weekend?

Colin: I’m sure they will. Rod and I aren’t all that involved in the merchandise side, but I know that they’re doing a special T-shirt of a lady in a red dress!

What was your first record?

Colin: The Everly Brothers’ All I Have To Do Is Dream, with Claudette on the B-side. I bought it for a girl that I really liked. I gave it a play first, then I gave it away. I remember getting all The Beatles albums in 1963. I bought every one.

Rod: Tommy Steele’s Singing The Blues. I broke it and tried to replace it, but all I could get was Guy Mitchell, which I didn’t like at all. My first album was an Elvis 10”, because I couldn’t get the Hound Dog single. I’ve still got it somewhere.

How did you come to set up your own Beechwood Park imprint?

Colin: It was a joint decision between management, the distributor and us. It all came about from a new deal that we signed about two years ago, whereby The Zombies own the masters. We were fortunate that a deal was done where we now have partners in them. It marks a new era that’s evolved since we signed half of the masters over to our distributors.

Having creative control over the audio, sleevenotes and vinyl variants must feel rewarding?

Colin: It certainly is. Though everything is still a group decision and we accept input from our partners.

What’s next?

Colin: I’m recording a solo album for release next year. There’s a big celebration of Bob Harris’ career at the Royal Albert Hall in December that Rod and I are going to join in with Robert Plant, Paul Weller and Roger Daltrey. That’ll be a great evening. Bob Harris is a star. Such a lovely bloke, and it’ll be wonderful to celebrate his incredible career.

See the
