This support group provides a safe, nonjudgmental space for Asian identifying immigrants to share their experiences, challenges, and successes in navigating life transitions. Through guided discussions, experiential activities, and peer support, participants will explore healthy ways to express emotions, manage stress, and strengthen relationships. The group fosters authenticity, resilience, and personal growth while celebrating cultural identity and building community connection.
Duration: 8 sessions
Dates: Monday (2026) 1/26, 2/2, 2/9, 2/16, 2/23, 3/2, 3/9, 3/16
Time: 8-930pm ET / 7-830pm CT / 6-730pm MT / 5-630pm PT (note the time zones)

This group is right for you if:
- You are 18+.
- You are willing to commit to 8 consecutive weeks of group work with consideration and respect for those also participating in this support group (1.5 hours).
- You, or a personal support has helped you, identify a need for better understanding and regulation of your emotions.
- You are ready and willing to challenge yourself to find new and healthier strategies to manage your emotions and engage in relationships.
- You are looking for a space to learn and practice new skills in a curious and non-judgmental environment.
This group is not right for you if:
- You are unsure about being able to attend most of the group sessions.
- You are participating out of obligation to someone else with no personal buy-in or interest in improving yourself.
- You are in a higher level of care or are being discharged from hospitalization/IOP/PHP, or are actively struggling with concerns around thoughts or behaviors of harming yourself or others.
Weekly Schedule:
Week 1 – Welcome, Individual, and Group Identity
- Introductions, confidentiality, and group purpose
- Individual goal setting
- Recognizing emotional experiences and expression
Week 2 – Acculturation and Cultural Adjustment (Identity, Discrimination, and Empowerment)
- Coping with culture shock and adapting to new norms
- Balancing home culture with host culture expectations
Week 3 – Family Expectations and Intergenerational Dynamics
- Processing pre-migration or migration-related dynamics
- Strategies for managing flashbacks or emotional triggers
Week 4 – Identity and Self-Esteem
- Exploring bicultural identity and sense of belonging
- Addressing self-worth in a new environment
Week 5 – Stress and Anxiety Related to Immigration
- Coping with financial stress or housing instability
- Identifying signs of chronic stress or anxiety
Week 6 – Mindfulness and Distress Tolerance Skills
- Breathing exercises, meditation, and relaxation techniques
- Developing strategies to slow down reactions and judgments
Week 7 – Building Support Networks and Community Connection
- Building connections and social networks in a new country
- Maintaining family and cultural ties while integrating
Week 8 – Closing
- Reflecting on personal growth and progress
- Group closure and final reflections
Facilitator Profile:
Thomas Yeung is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. With years of experience running recreational therapy groups in behavioral health hospitals, he is enthusiastic about integrating systematic processes to enhance clients' physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being through a recreational approach to counseling. Thomas is dedicated to serving the underserved population, particularly those in interracial marriages. He holds level one certification in Gottman Therapy and is well-informed in Internal Family Systems (IFS), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). He is recognized as the Utah Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (UAMFT) 2023 Student of the Year. Thomas can provide services in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English.
