Liturgy

Liturgy

written by: Daniel Deschenes

We spent the day together
I could see you grow restless
Before the service was even over
I was alone during the call to prayer

I wish I had known our Eucharist had ended
You left me with stained Vestments and sour wine
Under grimy stained-glass windows
The pews are all empty

Breakfast at that place you like
Angry gods ignore pleas for the sun
The sound of clinking spoons on coffee mugs
Summoning the parishioners

I try my best to conjure the words
To speak over you and I
Hoping the right incantation
Will finally relight the altar

But there is no amount of magic
No potion, no divination
Not in heaven above nor hell below
To bring these dry bones to life

So I watch our sigils fade
Rather than call the benediction
Because I can’t bear the thought
Of ending the ceremony

You’ll be gone by evening mass
And I will be left a ghost
Haunting this half-remembered cathedral
Waiting to be put to rest
