The new base building, freighter ships, and vehicle mechinics really saved this game from being a total failure. Despite a extremely pre-emptive launch of the game by Hello Games, they managed to pull this game around to be a truly enjoyable experience. First, the game was only fun for a few hours, then adventuring from planet to planet for no reason got rather... dull. Now, however-- there's more to it than that.

The game is subliminally separated into three paths-- The Path of the Atlas, The Journey to the Center of the Universe, and The Path of Freedom, is what I call them. The Atlas path cannot be explained without Spoilers, but it's basically the main quest. The Center of the Universe pathline is often the most popular, being rather self-explanitory. The Freedom Path was once the one that was despised... but now that there's things to do, such as claiming a planet as your home, this game improved ten-fold.

Don't let the other reviews fool you-- this game is very fun, you just have to focus on the good bits and forget the poor ones.

EDIT: After many years, Sean is still nurturing this game to the best it can be. Keep up the great work, HG, you guys truly know how to keep the flame of the awesome community going ever-strong.
