Ahem, there is no in lore reason why Morrowind is named as such. Sure there's the obvious explanation of "they named it that way back in Arena before they had much lore" but that's a cop out. The leading theory is that it's a name given to the region by the empire when Uriel Septim annexed the region in the same way we call Japan Japan despite it being called Nippon by the locals.

However I would refute these claims because there is no reason the rather xenophobic, outlander hating Great Houses of Telvanni and Dres would accept a name given by the empire and use it regularly, Redoran I would also be hesitant to believe would use an imperial name due to their incredibly traditional values, while the other two houses of Hiaalu and Indoril I can understand as they're a little more accepting of Imperial customs. Which then implies it must be an older name for the region but it also doesn't match up with any of the past dialects and kingdoms of the region. If we go back as far as the Dwemer owning the region before the Chimer emigrated from the Summerset Isles it was called Dwemereth so that's out of question.

Maybe it was during the reign of the Chimer but there isn't much a period it could've been named such. As when the Dwemer and Chimer ruled together it was called Resdayn which yet again is a different dialect. Maybe it was post the Battle of Red Mountain when the Dwemer disappeared and the Chimer became the Dunmer due to the Tribunal's betrayal of Indoril Nerevar and discarding of the Good Daedra, Azura, Boethiah, Mephala as their gods leading to their curse but by then it was called Veloth after the prophet. So at some point during the Golden age of the Dunmer it became known as Morrowind but definitely not by the Dunmer people as it doesn't sound anything like any other place they have named, ie Vvardenfell, Balmora, Ald'ruhn.
