There is such a dissonance between gameplay built around interactions and gameplay built around inputs. It's the difference between a quick time event and a minigame, between a game and a UI.
I haven't properly thought about it, but what makes games like Edith Finch, or Papers Please, work so well is that they are producing the experience of an interaction, rather than just letting you press buttons. This is a really good manifesto.
dog ambivalents unite!!!!
i found your musings on pushing buttons really interesting. there was a while where my working definition for a video game was 'pushing buttons' (idk if i believe that anymore but)
absolutely agree, my manifesto is also lightly critical of dog petting. but i love the level of depth you've gone into here on why. and beautiful presentation
"thank god there's a monstera" gave me a good laugh. i would love to play (or make!) a game that engages with plants on the same level that so many do with horses.
also i love the collage of ffxiv plants!
was talking about this exact issue with a friend the other day, thanks for the work. Long live horses.
this is the good shit. extremely specific gripe wonderfully explained. youre so right
Yes, we need to horse around.
you’re so right about game horses. beautifully written!
thank you!! means so much coming from you
