It will be a completely separate install with no dependancy on your live site.

That correct, this issue has been patched in version 1.26.5.

We have had other reports of this and its not related to your php version but it is something our developer is looking at.
We have not reports of any particular issues with 8.4

Set your backup schedule to manual, save it, and then set your retention limit to 4 and save it again.
Run another five backups.
Backups made before the retention limit is set are not counted so four of the backups should remain. The first backup you made after resetting the retention limit should be pruned.

Have they disabled your site scheduler?
You can can ask them to set a real cron job every 1-3 minutes when your backup is due to run.
