43 Renter-Friendly, Super Low-Effort Ways To Jazz Up Your Bedroom

You've gotta work with what you've got.

Whether you live solo, have three roommates, or escape from your (wonderful but extremely energetic) toddlers after you put them to bed, your bedroom is *your* space. But when you have a lease, there are limits to what you can do. However, you can still do all kinds of wonderful things to make it feel unique to you! Even if you can't paint, you can use damage-free wall mounts, unexpected storage and details, and small bedding tweaks to make a big difference. Read on for inspo!

    1. Swap your overhead or table lamp bulbs for a pair of LED stained glass bulbs if you wanna dial the whimsy up to 1,000. What a lovely alternative for a plain white box you can't paint!

Promising review: "I love these bulbs. They make any room all warm and cozy. Also a fantastic night-light for the little ones. :) Get you some!" —Amazon Customer

Get them from Amazon for $18.76+ (available in three styles).

    2. Add a non-overhead light source that is THE moment like this glossy glass lamp, a bendy lamp, or even a traditional shade with a non-traditional base. You can't remove that unsightly boob light but you *can* express some of your personal taste through a fun table lamp!

Promising review (for the glass lamp): "It's real glass – not plastic! Really happy with the quality. It has an actual socket for a candelabra bulb (not included) so you can replace the bulb, unlike the numerous built-in LED lamps sold everywhere." —Alyson Moy

Promising review (for the bendy lamp): "Easy to set up. Looks great in the house. Kids love it." —C. Wholberg

Promising review (for the traditional lamp): "Super cute and funky lamp. Easy to put together. Perfect for my little girl's bedroom." —Ren DeCan

Get them from Amazon: glass lamp for $38.99 (available in five colors), bendy lamp for $26.99, or non-traditional base for $45.99 (available in five colors).

    3. Or if you want to zhuzh up a boring lamp shade, drape a dramatic necklace on it like I did for mine or add a bunch of brooches to a plain shade like one TikToker did

Stack of books next to a modern lamp adorned with a decorative rope and badge
    Elizabeth Lilly / BuzzFeed

I grabbed this necklace at an antique shop in Palm Springs from a decommissioned ~secret~ society without plans on how to use it, but it found a home on this neutral lampshade!

If you love the brooches idea but don't have any lying around, here's a pack of 16 from Amazon for $23.99. If your lampshade is flat, this could work with enamel pins, though know that once you use this trick there's really no going back with that holey lampshade.

    4. Hang decorative tassels from lampshades, furniture pulls, doorknobs, wherever you could use a little jazzing up on the cheap.

One reviewer was able to dye the tassels to match a costume, so that's a possibility to match your vision!

Promising review: "These tassels are very nice. So nice that I immediately purchased another pair. They are made of a silky yarn that is very soft to the touch. The ratio of red to gold is well-balanced, giving it an elegant and sophisticated look. They're not too heavy, but the perfect weight to hang without easily moving around. I would say the price is very reasonable. I did say I purchased a second pair! I think they'll last for a long time." —Amazon Customer

Get two from Amazon for $12.96 (available in 11 colors).

If these are too pricey, there are lots of smaller, similar tassels for cheaper on Amazon.

    5. Even if you're not allowed to paint, there are tons of ways to bring some character to your walls, like putting up lighted curtains you can layer with some sheer curtains for an ethereal look.

Get them from Amazon: 300-LED light curtain for $14.99 and sheer curtains for $10.99+ (available in several colors and lengths)

And if you're looking for something slightly different check out these string lights with photo clips.

    6. Frame non-art things as pieces of artwork, like a coaster from your favorite restaraunt, your expired passport, or even a ticket from something special!

    Framed excerpt from
    Elizabeth Lilly / BuzzFeed

This beaut is a tiny leather book I bought at a flea market maybe a decade ago of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner that I thought was so cool, but I didn't really have any use for. So I framed it a few years ago and added it to my eclectic gallery wall above my couch. It isn't exactly evenly spaced in the frame, but I think that just adds to the charm? I just got a new passport and plan on framing my old one to an open page with the most stamps once I find a frame I like. Also, check out this TikToker's gallery wall of framed coasters for further inspo!

I used a plain spare frame I had lying around for this DIY, but you can grab two 3"x5" plain ones from Amazon for $6.99.

    7. Install wall art with Command strips made specifically for the task. This version is made to hold up to 16 lbs., and is easy to peel off the wall when it's time to move or you want to rearrange a gallery wall.

I've used these for most of my wall art, and when you (as the reviewer mentions) wait for the Command strip to adhere to the wall per the directions, it really can hold! Also, make sure to follow the directions on *where* to place the strips when it comes to whatever you're hanging up, because that matters a lot too. Like with all wall art installation, I rec using a level to make sure your art is even, because unlike with a nail, it's harder to tilt and adjust once the strip is in place.

Promising review: "Used these to hang a ton of pictures in our new mountain retreat. These worked great. Used them for both heavy and lighter photos. A little pricier than a nail, but I love the ease of removal, and it makes it easier to get them hung level. We followed the instructions and waited 24 hours to put the pictures up." —AmazonUtah

Get 14 pairs from Amazon for $12.25.

    8. Mask the ugly existing blinds with some NoNo Brackets, aka curtain rod brackets that fit onto your existing blinds without drilling any holes and and spackling them later.

Promising review: "This bracket is awesome and was extremely easy to install. We were able to hang curtains over our vertical blinds in just a few minutes and didn't even need any tools. Great product!!!" —Amazon Customer

Get a set of two from Amazon for $19.95 (also available in brownblackgold, and brass, and also available in inside-mount brackets).

    9. And if you're putting up some curtains, a set of room-darkening velvet curtains are a dramatic (except to your wallet) option!

Promising review: "Purchased these for my studio, which is in an old mill. I wanted them for their insulating properties more than to block out the light because my studio loses a lot of heat at night due to its enormous windows. The curtains/drapes work great for both — I am especially pleased with how well they help keep the space from losing heat! Before having the curtains the space would lose about 8 degrees in temperature overnight (which in the winter is a significant amount, especially in the northeast). Now, with the curtains, the space no longer loses heat overnight! It is now so nice to go into my studio in the morning and find it still toasty warm!" —Noname

Get them from Amazon for $21.99+ (available in four sizes and eight colors).

    10. Create a whimsical corner with some fun objects of varying levels. When in doubt for a group of something, go for an odd number (like my three candlesticks) because it will create the most visual interest.

Decorative shelf with marble candles, red vase, small framed art, lion figurines, Pizza Pizza box, and a bowl of trinkets
    Elizabeth Lilly / BuzzFeed

This is just a lil' corner on my table beside my couch where I grouped a bunch of red and black stuff together. When in doubt, a red moment is an easy win!

If you want to recreate the candle style, there are tons of black candle holders and fun taper candles on Amazon.

    11. Add on a set of satin pillowcases (that I own and can vouch have a soothing, cooling effect) as a way to treat your hair and skin better *while* adding some variety to your bedding! Opt for a color different than your sheet set to really make 'em pop!

Promising review: "My hair has never been better! I got this because of TikTok and it has done wonders for my hair. My hair isn’t frizzy or dull looking when I get up in the morning." —Aaron Key

Get a set of two from Amazon for $9.99 (available in 37 colors and five sizes).

    12. Or invest in a fun blanket you can toss "casually" on the foot of your bed or over your duvet that's a little tired to make your room feel newer.

Promising review: "This is a stunning blanket…..it is perfect for finishing off my boho bedroom look. I washed and dried it prior to using it and it turned out beautifully. I would suggest that the pictures online really need to show more of the darker teal side, as it is very rich with stunning color contrast. The weight and the fact that there is no fringe make this 100% cotton blanket perfect for sleeping in our cooler temps in Southern California." —Diane

Get it from Amazon for $43.99 (available in several patterns).

    13. But if buying some new bedding *is* in the cards (and you budget), go for a design that'll feel transformative up against your existing stuff.

Ornate bedding set with floral embroidery on a stylish bed, in an elegantly decorated room with a floor lamp and mirror
Leopard print bedding set on a stylish bed with decorative pillows and magazines, creating a trendy and cozy bedroom ambiance
    Amazon

Promising review: "I was blown away at how high-end this duvet cover was! It is absolutely beautiful! The weight of it is very substantial, so it won’t tear. It has a silk-like finish, which is gorgeous. I am so excited to find this item." —Joellen Chapman

Get it from Amazon for $46.99+ (available in nine designs and five sizes).

    14. Get a night-light for your bed that'll make you feel like you're staying at a fancy hotel as you step around that pile of clothes that fell off "the chair" in the middle of the night.

Promising review: "Great light strip. The motion sensor has a good range and then controls for time on and brightness are wonderful. The 3M tape on the back could be stronger, but for the price and motion sensor it is a great buy. Also we have this plugged into a smart outlet so that it only turns on during certain hours of the day. That plus the feature that is there is enough ambient light, the motion sensor doesn't trigger makes this on par with systems that are far more expensive. Works great with Google home as well because of the linked smart plug. Very happy with the purchase. Would be 4.5 stars just because of the tape not being sticky enough, but they do provide a second roll in the box, which helps." —AC

Get it from Amazon for $17.99.

    15. Make bedside essentials feel a little more special with a "house" tissue box cover or an elegant faux-leather cover (with some Bottega Veneta vibes) because you NEED some tissues for your sniffles, but those Kleenex box designs are hideous.

stack of books with house-shaped box that covers up a square tissue box
Woven tissue box cover with a tissue sticking out, sitting on a kitchen countertop. Modern and stylish home decor item
    Elizabeth Lilly / BuzzFeed, www.amazon.com

That is my nightstand on the left. I love this thing! And it for real reminds me to buy tissues.

Promising review (for the house): "Since I am a broke 31-year-old this was the only house I can afford. Plus it helps hide the tissues I use to cry in every night." —Lizbanta

Promising review (for the faux-leather): "This tissue box cover stylish and fits perfectly. It's easy to remove and replace and great for disguising tissue cardboard boxes. The texture adds a nice touch and is good addition to any bedroom decor." —Cathy

Get them from Amazon: house for $10+ (available in two colors) or faux-leather for $6.99+ (available in 13 colors).

    16. Get creative to contain the (necessary) mess with faux coffee table books that resemble $$$ Assouline travel series you've seen styled in a million splashy home spreads. They'll add some visual interest while containing your occasional essentials like the Kindle charger you use maybe once a month but need nearby.

Promising review: "The color of these books is actually more vivid and beautiful in person. I’m thrilled with how it looks on the shelf — plus it’s a very good hiding spot. I would 100% recommend these for anyone looking to add color to your home." —elishiva

Get a set of four from Amazon for $29.99

    17. And if your router is in your bedroom, mask it with a bookish disguise for a FAR nicer look than the bulky unit Spectrum had in stock when you needed it.

My sister ever bought one for her daughter." —Mandy

Promising review (for the right): "UGH I FEEL LIKE A PRINCESS!! Love this net, easy to put up. Good quality and comes with bows! The lights can be battery-powered or plugged in. My friends have complimented it and find it very cozy. I also have autism, and this gives me great comfort!" —Meow

People walking on our community trail can see up into our upstairs bathroom when the light is on and it's dark outside. Not a good plan at all. So I used this window film and cut different-sized circles and placed then on this window to interrupt the view into the house. Worked perfectly! Very easy to use." —Marsgard

After lots of research and choices, I chose this one. It came with the leaves off. They were easily connected to each branch. The leaves and branches are bendable, which helps to make it even more realistic. I used my pot, I had my live one in, and topped it off with some of the leftover soil. Now I can enjoy my favorite plant without worrying about how to keep it alive. I highly recommend!" —HC

Person holds a trophy filled with pens in front of an astrological chart featuring symbols for Earth and Water
Ceramic cup and saucer set with cloud design, placed on a dark counter
    Elizabeth Lilly / BuzzFeed, www.amazon.com

I grabbed this trophy sample at an antique store a few years back with "I'll find an eventual use for this" plans and realized it would make a dramatic, generously sized pen cup. I've had my eye on this cute lil' coffee mug a while and the TikTok girlies are WILD for putting perfume samples or mathcbooks into a small bowl or teacup.

    37. Rig up a set of floating candles you can whip a magic "wand" remote at to turn on for a ghostly effect. And you can get REALLY creative with them by staggering the candles' heights because each comes with a nearly-5-foot clear fishing line. WHO says every day can't be Halloween in your room?!

Promising review: "I purchased these after I saw them in a viral TikTok video, and they did not disappoint! Every single one of the candles works perfectly and the flame flickers just like a real candle. They were really easy to put up into the ceiling because they were already strong with the fishing line. I just used clear thumbtacks and wrapped the line around it and hung it to the ceiling. The wand is so cool and works perfectly well for turning on and off the lights. I definitely would purchase more to add a little bit more magic throughout the house! Absolutely worth it!" —Korg

Get a set of 12 from Amazon for $19.99 (available in six varieties).

    38. Or move around a set of remote-controlled flameless candles as you please to help establish an ~atmosphere~ without causing a fire hazard. They're incredibly convincing, though, so you might wanna tell guests before they worry about you leaving them unattended.

Promising review: "I bought one set and loved them so much I bought two more sets. They're the most realistic looking fake candles I've bought so far. The 'flame' up close obviously doesn't look real but from afar with the flicker setting on, you almost can't tell these aren't real. They also put out a decent amount of light for being fake. Gives my living room a very cozy feel which is what I wanted. Remote works great as well." —suckerforcats

    40. Fill an attention-grabbing vase with some faux flowers you won't have to tend to but can admire for a looooong, long time. Like, as long as your lease lasts!

Promising review (for the vase): "I filled this with faux succulents and it’s just precious. The quality is very good." —Kelli S.

Promising review (for the faux peonies): "These are absolutely gorgeous. Just fluff them a bit like you would a regular flower and they look great. They come with the stem folded in half and bundled so you can adjust the length, but since I was using an opaque vase, I just kept them that way. They are perfect fullness for an average bouquet. I haven’t had any issues with any of them falling off. As a pet owner, this was a great solution to bring some life into my living space without worrying about them becoming a pet snack." —Nay

Promising review: "This is such a comfortable chair or bed! I was very happy with my purchase. You won’t go wrong if you are looking for comfort or if you need to even save space. I highly recommend this." —danny

    42. Give your eyeglasses a fun spot to rest for the night on your nightstand with this funky horse (or other animal) so you'll know exactly where they are once you go looking for them in the morn.

Promising review: "I bought this for a friend's birthday, who is always losing her sunglasses. I was concerned because some reviews said it fell over too easily or the glasses didn't fit. I suspect they were using it wrong, as I did at first. The bridge of the glasses goes over the horse's nose, with the temples crossing in the slot. I have pretty thick heavy glasses, and it works fine." —Judith

Get it from Amazon for $9.99 (available in eight animals).

    43. Use a bed skirt (and iron or steam it before you put it on your bed). It'll make your whole setup look SO much tidier and is often overlooked these days. And with one of these, you can successfully shove so much underneath your bed away from prying eyes — or even your own eyes.
