Zambia lead poisoning victims sue mining giant

In Kabwe, in central Zambia, decades-old lead pollution from a former mine is still poisoning children. Six‑year‑old Elizabeth has dangerously high levels of lead in her blood, leaving her weak and unable to learn.

Residents say toxic dust, ongoing small‑scale mining and lack of cleanup have worsened the crisis. A class action suit against Anglo American mining company is seeking compensation and environmental remediation. Families hope it will finally allow them to escape the contaminated area.
