@andrejtrindade

All of your inquiries are connected! The mechanical birds exist in a couple areas of the map and turning one on in one place turns them on in others too!

I guess I'll need a bit more guidance, @rupees...

EDIT: Never mind, I just found what I was looking for! Too bad I found a bug. It's hidden below to avoid spoilers.

There's a creepy bird at night here (screenshot taken during lightning):

I entered the door below the creepy big bird, then I left, tried to go back to the main area of the game, and then the game became completely "pink/orange" (as if you were turning night to day), only showing birds and names... Had to reset. May this be related to the fact that I entered this cave before getting the key?

It's really great so far but I don't know how to get the green color/access the lower area for the life of me.

edit: I managed to finish the game, and It's one of my favorites now. Also, I have a bird named after me :D

@Ducklover1:

Green is the last color you will get. Do you have the other 5 colors?

To access the lower area of the map you have to open the door to the right of the beige-pink-blue door. This door has no hint, but there's a hint near by... Notice: you have to open this door during the night, coming from the south.

Once you have access to the lower area of the map during the day you will find you way to the green beam!

If you need more help, let me know!

@rupees: I finished the game... Didn't want it to end. That's how much I liked it.

Easy star. One of the best experiences I've ever had in PICO-8.

I have a single, humble suggestion: use cartdata. It makes your game much more user friendly, especially on mobile. I know it's probably too late for Beam because of tokens, but please consider it on your next projects.

I still have a few considerations, but I'll hide them to avoid spoilers.

A bird named after me? That's AMAZING... For a second, I thought I didn't know about some API call that returned the logged user. But then I searched the code and found my username!

Now that I'm not afraid of spoilers anymore, I've gone through the comments and found this:

> I had originally named the birds after people that played or commented on the cart but I felt bad about doing that without their permission. Would love to add you and your daughter to the list! And that goes for anyone else that wants to be immortalized as a bird in this game! Just let me know.

Don't worry, you have my permission. This moment was totally awesome!

It's hard to describe the feeling I experienced... Seeing a bird flying with my name at the end of the game, then discovering the author hardcoded it there... Without knowing if I would ever finish the game, if I would ever see that. I felt the human connection.

It was melancholic, but beautiful. It reminded me of the feeling I had when I finished Journey on PS3 a decade ago.

One of the best moments I've ever had in video games. I mean it.

Again: amazing game. Congratulations on being featured... Well deserved!

@rupees, I have a theory abot Beam's lore...

  • Games are magical, yours included. Day mode represents this.

  • Game development is hard, fighting with tokens and PAL() included. Night mode represents this.

  • Birds of a feather flock together. We, the players, are set free from our daily worries by your game - the main character represents the game itself!

  • Finally, the big bird represents you. The game can only set you free from development hell once all players have been able to enjoy the game...

Almost certainly not what you had in mind, but I loved reading into Beam's narrative and coming up with this meta symbolism! :)

@andrejtrindade I’m ecstatic that you enjoyed Beam so much! I’ll have to look into cartdata because the mobile phone gap in functionality hurts me! I’m not even sure what it can offer but I’ll look into it for future projects. About the birds…

…they were just going to be ornamental and I guess they stayed ornamental but they kept writing themselves back in to be a bigger part of the game. They would just fly away for the majority of the build process but one day on my way home from work I started thinking of the trees by my parents house and how they would just get full of birds and they would move as a group and I thought what if they looped through the map and allofthesudden the game wasn’t so lonely. It was alive! None of it felt like my idea. Naming them after real players just felt appropriate after that. It’s way cool hearing the experience first hand from a player!

Thanks for sharing your insights during the cart development, @rupees... Its inspiring!

@andrejtrindade I am having the EXACT same issues that you had. I'm just stuck. I'm sure I'm missing something... All lights activated, mechanical birds activated, but can't get the door on the lower right of the map open.

You can expand this answer from @rupees for a general hint, @mardem1976. But I'll leave specific instructions below if you really need them.

SPOILER ALERT: expand only if you don't mind spoiling this particular puzzle...

If you already activated the mechanical yellow bird on the waterfall next to the pillars, go check this other mechanical yellow bird next to the door you want to open. Something will be different from the picture below... You will know what to do.

@andrejtrindade thank you!

Found this weird bug (Endgame spoilers):

I was vibing in the end game area for a while admiring the birds when the background glitched out and the character got stuck. Fortunately there's nothing else to do in the game besides going up but I though it was funny.

Very similar to the bug I reported here. I bet root cause is the same, @Verb...

wow, an exceptional gem. reminds me of fez more than anything. such good vibes <3 <3 <3

that said... i got stuck... spoilers

how do you get through the door with all six colors? i see it has a little birdman face up there, but i can't seem to interact with the birdman, or the place where the birdman is during the day... halp plz T_T

edit: figured it out! again thank you for this lovely game. such a gem and clearly a lot of love went into it ^_^

Got five colors and a dream of

reaching the bottom of the map and

completing the game.

I do have

a bird on my head
so there's that.
Any tips?

E:

okay I was trying to interact with that blue+yellow stone pillar instead of the actual door

:facepalm:

E: Fantastic game! Thank you so much for making this! That was a really cool easter egg you put on the far left of the map as well ;)
