New Seasons Market and D6 set an ambitious objective: to create a carbon-negative process for PET packaging. With no existing roadmap or established model, nor goverment subsidies. Together, we designed and implemented a consumer-facing closed-loop system—“Buy Here, Recycle Here”—that enables responsible recovery of PET materials at the point of purchase (20+ locations). In under three years, this system has been successfully implemented and scaled. For every 1 pound of PET plastic produced and sold by D6 at New Seasons Market locations, 6 pounds of hard-to-recycle PET thermoforms have been recovered and recycled. This achievement represents a first-of-its-kind solution in our industry and demonstrates that innovative, localized recycling systems can deliver measurable, climate-positive outcomes for hard to DOMESTIC recycled PET thermoforms.
