A strong start to WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers World News Media Congress 2026. One theme came through loud and clear in today's opening session: AI may be changing our industry, but the value of trusted journalism has never been more important. From Ladina Heimgartner's balanced perspective on the opportunities and risks of AI, to Henna Virkkunen's comments on copyright and regulation, to the honour of hearing from Catherine Pégard, France's Minister of Culture, on the essential role journalists and news media play in society, and AG Sulzberger's call to protect the work of journalists and creators, the conversation wasn't just about technology.
