New Research Spotlight: Why NPi Matters One of the things I’m most passionate about in my Clinical Marketing role is helping translate high-quality clinical research into practical, bedside insight for our field team. A 2025 study published by Rana et al. in the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing adds meaningful evidence to the growing body of literature supporting the Neurological Pupil Index (NPi) as a clinically relevant, objective biomarker in neurocritical care. This single-center, retrospective study examined patients in a neuroscience ICU and paired serial NPi measurements with head CT imaging. The authors found that abnormal NPi values were significantly associated with midline shift, while patients without NPi changes did not demonstrate worsening shift on imaging. What stands out in this work is the focus on trending NPi over time and its relationship to horizontal brain displacement, reinforcing the idea that standardized, quantitative pupillometry, with NPi, can provide early insight that complements the clinical exam and imaging. One of the many things that sets NPi apart is that it is a clinically validated, objective, and standardized metric of the pupillary light reflex. When trended over time, NPi can support earlier recognition of neurologic change and more informed clinical decision-making. I encourage you to read this publication and let me know your thoughts. How are NPi trends incorporated into your current workflow?
