The evolution of the smart thermostat category has led to the smart thermostat becoming a central piece of the smart home, with more premium models offering hub functionality and including integrations with security and energy equipment like generators, battery storage, and solar panels. Smart thermostats are internet-connected and can perform all the tasks that the most advanced traditional non-programmable (vintage dial) and programmable (schedules set-points) thermostats perform. The connectivity enables them to be controlled remotely and can utilize the cloud to facilitate sophisticated home automation as well as advanced solutions for energy providers and utilities. Some advanced smart thermostats gather and analyze a variety of data from HVAC runtime, home environment, owner location, weather, utility company plans, and other sources to efficiently automate home energy consumption and comfort. Nest has successfully positioned smart thermostats as “learning thermostats,” a phrase that denotes the device’s ability to understand consumer preferences over time and automate control based on those learned preferences.
