Why the Co-Creator of the Transformer is Sick of Transformers Adapted from a recent talk by Llion Jones, Co-Founder and CTO of Sakana AI. TED AI Talk: https://lnkd.in/gGcwAfs5 ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ I am one of the authors of "Attention Is All You Need". That paper introduced the Transformer, the "T" in ChatGPT. But looking back, I realized something terrifying. The environment that created the Transformer was organic. We scribbled on whiteboards over lunch with zero management pressure. We had the ultimate luxury: Freedom. My deep concern is that in the modern AI industry, that environment no longer exists. <<The AI Paradox>> ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ We have more money and talent than ever, yet our research has narrowed. Why? Pressure. Investors demand returns and researchers are terrified of being "scooped". So instead of taking risks, everyone rushes for the "low-hanging fruit". <<Exploration vs. Exploitation>> ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ AI research is a trade-off between Exploitation (digging deeper into what works) and Exploration (wandering into unknown territory). Right now, the industry is stuck in Exploitation mode. We are endlessly mutating the Transformer for incremental gains. It reminds me of the era before Transformers. Everyone was obsessed with tweaking Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). Then our paper came out, and all that incremental work became instantly irrelevant. We needed a conceptual leap—we needed to throw away recurrence completely. I worry we are making the same mistake again. We are so focused on the current winner that we are missing the breakthrough around the corner. <<Be Bold Enough to Wander>> ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ At Sakana AI, we follow a rule inspired by Brian Cheung: "You should only do the research that wouldn't happen if you weren't working on it." If everyone followed this, we would explore the map much more efficiently. That is why I am drastically reducing the time I spend on Transformers.
