As part of our monthlong Indiana 250 recognition series, this week we’re featuring Lisa Hershman! Secretary of Management and Budget Lisa Hershman was appointed by Governor Mike Braun in December 2024. As the state’s chief financial officer, she oversees the state budget, financial management and administrative operations, and she manages agencies in finance, technology, and shared services. Before leading Indiana’s Office of Management and Budget, Hershman served as chief managing officer of the U.S. Department of Defense, managing a budget of $168 billion. Prior to her government service, she founded and served as CEO of the DeNovo Group, a business management consulting company. On this day in 1908, the Fisher and Bradshaw Company of Delphi introduced one of the earliest enclosed “school hack” designs in the country. Before this innovation, rural students traveled in open, canvas-topped wagons like the first photo from Pittsboro School in 1901. The new enclosed hacks offered far better protection from Indiana’s weather. Within a few years, updated designs were appearing across the state, including the semi-enclosed example shown in the second photo from Westphalia in Knox County around 1915. Governor Mike Braun today declared a new statewide energy emergency and reinstituted his suspension of Indiana’s Gasoline Usage Tax and Gasoline Excise Tax through September 5, continuing nation-leading relief for Hoosiers from high gas prices.

As part of our monthlong Indiana 250 recognition series, today we’re featuring our first honoree and their impact across Indiana. Chuck Goodrich was named Indiana’s Secretary of Commerce this summer by Governor Mike Braun. Goodrich serves as the CEO of Gaylor Electric, one of the largest merit‑shop electrical firms in the country. Since becoming president in 2014, the company has developed more than 4,000 jobs. He is a longtime workforce development advocate whose leadership spans the construction industry, higher education and state workforce policy. Goodrich is a past chairman of the National Associated Builders and Contractors, serves on Purdue’s Construction Advisory Council and is a member of Indiana’s Region 5 Workforce Development Board.

Indiana made the cut! The Indiana State Police cruiser will appear in the American Association of State Troopers (AAST) 2027 “Best Looking Cruiser” wall calendar. We didn’t grab the cover spot, but we’re proud to see Indiana recognized among the top entries nationwide!
