When the Illinois School Bus Company switched to soy-based biodiesel in 2003, the difference was immediate. No black smoke billowing from the exhaust, no debris clogging the fuel filter and less pollutants filling the air of the community. The long-term benefits are just as impressive: increased engine lubricity and better fuel mileage. It’s just another example of how soy fuels change.

What is SoyFoam? It’s the award-winning, life-saving, PFAS-free, firefighting foam made of soy. What was once formulated as a training foam is now being used to quell fires in 23 states, thanks to its renewability and safety. Not only is it the only GreenScreen Gold certified and USDA biopreferred fire foam, Soyfoam also won the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Challenge award. Not bad for a bunch of beans.

Certain bioactive compounds in soybeans called isoflavones and saponins can reduce the effects of respiratory disease in pigs. U.S. Soy hosted a breakout session at the 2025 Allen D. Leman Swine Conference, where Drs. Dean Boyd, Ryan Dilger, and Brooke Smith shared data from commercial trials. Pigs infected with a respiratory virus who were fed isoflavones showed significantly lower mortality, potentially leading to as much as a 30% increase in revenue for producers. More than a century ago, Rudolf Diesel saw the future. “If at present the applicability of vegetable and animal oil to Diesel motors seems insignificant, it may develop in the course of time to reach an importance equal to that of natural liquid fuels.” — Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the diesel engine, 1912 Today, he's being proven right on roads, railways and oceans. Soy-based biodiesel is now integrated into essential industries, making transportation more sustainable.
