As US intern season is starting, this is a message I shared with the team: I’ve been thinking a lot about the “AI and job loss” debate, especially with a focus on entry-level white-collar jobs. See, for example, the current The New York Times Hard Fork podcast episode, which I felt dealt with this in a somewhat unsatisfactory way. This is top of mind for me as a new set of awesome interns is onboarding into Vercel’s engineering and design teams. I think that Ben Thompson of Stratechery fame has it right in the sense that the AI job disruption isn’t like PCs, or the Internet, or the iPhone: it is like the mainframe and ERP systems in particular. Now, possibly nobody working as this company right now is old enough to have experienced this original IT disruption happening in the 60s and early 70s. ERP and automated accounting software replaced armies of white collar workers doing mind numbing work manually calculating company metrics and data on paper. These jobs then got completely eliminated. Thing is, that it was fine. What happened was that productivity exploded, and when that happens companies invest, the economy growth and companies create more, much higher value jobs. A key worry is that entry level jobs are “needed” to teach young people “how to work”. I think that’s bullshit because “how to work” is changing. As companies get more productive, they will again hire more folks to manage the high value tasks, and there aren’t infinite of experienced people out there. Quite the opposite, and as the AI-native generation is growing up, they will have one-leg up to the old-guard stuck in their pre-AI ways. So, the advice I’d be giving folks entering the job market today is: - Become AI-native - Multiply yourself - And aim higher: There are still entry level job but be prepared to enter at a higher level, and have more responsibility from the start - As company leaders, we need to get out of our comfort zone and live with the fact that less experienced folks will have more responsibility, and will need to mess up every so often to hone their skills.
