Strong passwords are a foundation of strong online security, but remembering them can be a pain. You could use a password manager, but in the instances where you cannot, like when creating passwords for your children, consider using your own personal algorithm. What's a personal algorithm? It's like a recipe unique to you and the services you're signing into that can help you create and remember strong passwords. An example of a personal algorithm might be S-A-N-D, where S is an acronym for the services you're creating a password for. A, a unique three-digit code you can use to remember, N, a string of special characters, and D is a date or year meaningful to you. So, if I was to use S-A-N-D to create a password for my Hotmail back in 1995, I might use S-H-T-M-A-0-0-1-N-A-STRIX-EX-LAMATION-EX-LAMATION and D- 1995. So, my password would be H-T-M-0-0-1-A-STRIX-EX-LAMATION-EX-LAMATION- 1995. Your own personal algorithms can help you create strong, unique passwords for every service you use. I could reuse this recipe or one just like it to create other passwords too. If I wanted to make one for MSN, it might be MSN-001-A-STRIX-EX-LAMATION-EX-LAMATION- 1996. So, consider the personal algorithm an extra tool in your password creation and management toolbox and use it alongside services like MFA, password vaults, hardware keys, and more.
