In April 2026, The Citizen Lab and International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) undertook a joint investigation into ICIJ impersonators and phony Chinese whistleblowers undertaking outreach to ICIJ reporters as part of a strategy aimed at stealing private information from entities of interest to the Chinese government, such Uyghur, Tibetan, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong diaspora activists, as well as journalists from ICIJ and elsewhere.
