POWER ANIMALS: How to Connect!

This is an excerpt from our book Psychic Intelligence:

Power animals, or animal totems, are animals with whom we identify spiritually and who have special lessons to teach us about life. Animal guides can reflect our own personal strengths and weaknesses and guide us through difficult times. They can also help to awaken our energies and shift our negative patterns. According to some traditions, the animal chooses the person who can benefit most from its particular energy and guidance.

Animal totems are associated with particular meanings. Here are some of those that are most common.

Bear: Introspection. Symbolic of the intuitive mind. The bear helps you to look inward to discover your true goal. Hibernate with your ideas or projects until the time is right. The bear is also a symbol of power. You may need to defend your beliefs.

Butterfly: Symbolic of joy and transformation. Brings clarity or organization. The butterfly can show you the next step in your personal life.

Cat: A link to the tiger or lion family. Cat symbolizes wholeness, and teaches that the spiritual and physical realms are one, not separate worlds.

Crow: The guardian of magic and healing. When there are crows around you can be certain that something special is about to happen.

Deer: Associated with unconditional love, gentleness, innocence and compassionate action. It represents our connection with our inner child.

Dolphin: Symbol of breath, sound, kindness, play, intelligence, communication, and awareness.

Dog: A link to the wolf, the dog symbolizes protection and loyalty, as well as the ability to accept life and its challenges.

Eagle: Represents a state of grace—seeing beyond the mundane world to your greater purpose—achieved through hard work, understanding, and trials. The Eagle is the symbol of success, wealth, freedom, and courage.

Fox: Teaches us detachment, to be alert, and to observe with our intuitive sense so that we know when to act. We need to be clever, but patient and very discreet.

Hawk: Messenger of the gods. Trains you to be the observer. The hawk invites you to seek the truth and be more aware. A hawk could foretell the birth of a child, or a problem coming into your life.

Lion: Symbolic of courage and heart-centered leadership, the lion presents a lesson about wisdom in dealing with groups and teaches us to trust our creativity, intuition, and imagination.

Snake: Signifies transmutation. It is the power of creativity, sexuality, and alchemy. The snake is the energy of cosmic consciousness and teaches you that you are a universal soul. It tells you to let go of things that are no longer useful.

Squirrel: Represents being prepared and the ability to plan ahead. Also symbolizes letting go of negative, limiting beliefs.

Tiger: The tiger represents passion and sensuality. It also symbolizes being focused on the present moment. The tiger brings forth a quiet, solitary power.

Turtle: Turtle teaches us to be careful in new situations and to take things slowly so that we can develop our thoughts and ideas and figure out how to protect ourselves or move ahead.

Wolf: Teacher; the pathfinder. The wolf is about exploring hidden aspects of your consciousness. It teaches you to develop strength, balance, and confidence in your decisions so that you don’t lose your identity.

Which Animal Are You Drawn To?

Is there an animal or bird you feel most drawn to? Have you noticed a recurring animal in your dreams? Does a particular animal or bird seem to have your own personality characteristics? Sometimes very intuitive people are drawn to cats, for example, because they have an otherworldly quality and seem to know a secret that we don’t.

The following meditation may help you to access your own animal totems:

• Take a moment to center yourself with three deep breaths in and out.
• Visualize a bright light shining ahead, and see yourself walking toward it.
• Imagine that you are approaching the doorway to an unseen realm.
• Open the door, and see a beautiful forest, with flowers and lush foliage everywhere. As you take in the beauty of the forest, imagine a winding path and begin to walk down this path.
• Pause for a few moments and quietly invite your animal guide to appear. What animal do you see? Is there more than one? What does this animal say to you? Is there a message? Ask him what chakra he is protecting, or any other question you might have.
• Thank your power animal and promise that you will return. Now say good-bye, retrace your steps up the path and back through the door.
