Freelancing shakes up so many of the principles of full-time work and careers, and growth is one of the ones that I like to challenge. As freelancers, we don’t get promotions. At first, I was admittedly jealous of my full-time friends who got new roles, raises, and recognition. But now, it’s freeing to follow my own path, even compared to our notions of freelance growth. About two months ago (goes to show that I’ve had a few post ideas tucked away), Anna Sonnenberg mentioned this takeaway from 10 years in the biz: “Growth doesn't always mean hiring or scaling. For me, it's meant learning new skills, mastering new tech, delivering higher quality work, and creating a client roster that's perfect for me – not building an agency.” And it was reassuring to read as someone with a shorter freelance journey. Even on our end, I feel that there’s an assumption that the only way up is to outsource or start an agency. But I’m on Anna’s page — I started freelancing because full-time work crushed my mental health, and my goal has always been to build a good life for myself through my work versus becoming a boss. Sure, I’d like to add more content strategy work to my plate, but with the goal of diversifying my work rather than becoming a content lead. So remember: There’s no set path for freelancing, so if you can meet your financial needs and build a life that works for you, don’t sweat what people think you should be. Create your own path that makes you happy and fulfilled.

I’ve spent 6-7 years working part-time and full-time corporate jobs and I’d never go back… Because I’ve tried freelancing and there’s no way a job can give me better returns! Here are the 5 reasons I wouldn’t go back: 1. I control my income ceiling. In a job, there’s a salary cap. Promotions take years. Increments are 10-15% if you’re lucky. Freelancing? I can double my income in 3 months if I want to. My income grows with my skills and demand, not company budgets. 2. I choose who I work with. In a job, you don’t get to pick your boss, your team, or toxic colleagues. Freelancing? I say no to clients whose energy doesn’t match mine. I work with people I genuinely enjoy working with. That alone is priceless. 3. I work on MY terms. No fixed 9-to-5. No asking for leave. No “work from home approval.” I work when I’m most productive. I take breaks when I need them. I build my schedule around my life, not the other way around. 4. I’m building my clients’ brands AND my own. In a job, you build someone else’s business and your name stays in the background. Freelancing? Every client I work with, every result I deliver, it builds my clients’ success AND my credibility, my portfolio, my reputation. I’m not just earning. I’m building something that’s mine too. 5. I can scale without permission. Want to raise your prices in a job? Good luck convincing HR. Want to take on bigger projects? Wait for approval. Freelancing? I decide when to scale, when to raise rates, when to expand services. No one controls my growth except me. A job gives you stability. I’m not denying that. Passing the decade milestone as a freelancer, I’ve identified what’s helped to sustain my interest in the work, continue to drive demand from clients, and other insights that have made self-employment a viable, rewarding path. In my latest for Fast Company, I explore lessons in building a long-term practice based on what’s proven effective for myself and other freelancers. ➤ Niche down strategically so it’s clear what you offer, the types of clients you serve, and what’s unique about your expertise. You can’t be everything for everyone, get specific instead. ➤ Consistently share your ideas publicly, whether through podcasting, a newsletter, or otherwise so clients find you based on your insightful ideas and solutions. ➤ Craft a deployable network. According to Lola Bakare, build relationships with colleagues across sectors, and when the time is right, deploy their willingness to support you. “Be very willing to not just ask for help, but surround yourself in help,” she suggests. You can’t just rely on yourself to make it happen. ➤ Secure social proof. “Over-index on social proof. Early in your career, it's essential to ensure you're being taken seriously,” advises Dorie Clark. “The best way to do this is to gather as much social proof - i.e., easily understood and verifiable symbols of your competence - as quickly as possible.” ➤ Prioritize reliability. “This doesn't mean you have to perform perfectly.
