Computer virus and Antivirus

COMPUTER VIRUS
To understand what a computer virus is, you need to understand what a computer program is, because that's exactly what a virus is: a computer program. A program (what we usually call "software") is a list of instructions for a computer to execute. Generally, people program computers to do helpful things (word processors, calculators, email programs, are all examples of helpful programs). But sometimes people write programs that do unhelpful things. A program that erases all the files on your hard drive, or a program that emails your personal files to all your friends--or even complete strangers. This kind of program is a virus. But why call it a virus? Well, like a virus, it can be very destructive. Also, a virus propagates and spreads itself, and most computer viruses also have a mechanism for spreading themselves . Unlike a biological virus, a computer virus is a small program written by human to alter the way a computer operates, without the permission or knowledge of the user Note: A computer virus behaves in a way similar to a biological virus, which spreads by inserting itself into living cells

FIRST Computer VIRUS

Elk Cloner is one of the first known microcomputer viruses.

It was written by a

15-year-old high school student named Rich Skrenta for Apple II systems.

INTERACTING SESSION
What is the difference between computer Virus and biological virus?

Types of Virus
Viruses are one of the several types of malicious software worms Trojan horses Spyware Identity Theft Adware

WORM & TROJAN HORSE

A worm is self-contained and does not need to be part of another program to spread itself. Worms harm the network and add to network traffic. A Trojan Horse is form of malware that is used to create a back door or hole in your security system. This is then used to easily install Adware, Spyware, and Viruses.

SPYWARE
Spyware is a software designed to take control of another computer system without the knowledge of the owner.

IDENTITY THEFT
Identity Theft is a harmful act by deliberately impersonating a person. With the help of this virus one can theft the identity of other.

ADWARE

INTERACTING SESSION
1. Why spyware software is used?
2. What is called Identify theft? (All With examples)

INFECTION & DISINFECTION

Infection
The insertion of a virus into the program is termed as an infection

Disinfection
The process of removing all the infected files on the computer system

ANTI VIRUS
What is an anti virus?
It is a computer programs that attempt to identify and eliminate computer viruses and other malicious software

ANTI VIRUS
Anti-virus software, originally designed to protect computers from

Further Protection
If it finds an infected file that cannot be deleted, it can quarantine the file so that it cannot infect other files or programs on your computer.

Can be CD,DVD,Floopy, Email Attachment, Flash memory etc.

Hard Drive,RAM

Anti Virus Functionalities

TECHNIQUES
1. Scanning all files to look for known viruses matching definitions in a virus dictionary 2. Identifying suspicious behaviour from any computer program which might indicate infection

INTERACTING SESSION
1. What is called anti virus? 2. Why anti virus software is used? 3. What are the functions of anti virus?

POPULAR ANTI VIRUS

Some of the popular antivirus packages are, Norton Antivirus MacAfee, AVG Antivirus Quick Heal etc

This software typically uses two different techniques to identify virus

FAMOUS COMPUTER VIRUSES

Famous Computer Viruses.

These computer viruses caused billions of dollars in damage and an immeasurable amount of frustration to computer users around the world.

Creeper - (1971) This is noted as possibly the first ever computer virus. It infected computers on ARPANET. Mostly harmless, the concept of Creeper has infected the minds of rogue programmers through today. Melissa (March 1999): Melissa was an e-mail virus that came into effect when users opened a Word document attachment. The virus sent itself to email addresses on the address books of the affected user's Outlook program. The author was arrested and charged with a federal charge of spreading a computer virus. Love Bug (May 2000): Another e-mail attachment virus, Love Bug encouraged users to open an attachment which supposedly was a love letter. The virus spread from Asia to the United States, but the author was never charged since there were no laws against cyber crimes in the Philippines.

Famous Computer Viruses.

Code Red (July 2001): Code Red was a destructive worm that caused $1.2 billion in damage. The author was never caught, but after a warning was issued, most users were able to eventually protect their machines. Bugbear (October 2002): Bugbear abused Microsoft Outlook in a way which allowed users' credit card numbers and passwords to be seen by the viruses author, who was never caught. Blaster (August 2003): Blaster was a worm, which was said to affect over 500,000 computers. The worm slowed down the speed of affected users' computers and often caused users to have to reboot after a few minutes of computer use. The original author was never caught
