CLASSIFICATION
MECHANISM OF ACTION An essential mineral found in hemoglobin, myoglobin and many enzymes. Parenteral iron enters the bloodstream and organs of the reticuloendothelial system (liver, spleen, and bone marrow), where is separated out and becomes part of iron stores

NURSING INTERVENTIONS BEFORE:
Assess nutritional status and dietary history to determine possible cause of anemia and need for patient teaching Assess and teach significant others of the patient the common side effects of the drug and to report any severe adverse effects stat. Advise patient that stools may become dark green or black and that this change is harmless.

DOSAGE: Minimum dose: 300mg 2-4x PO Maximum dose: 325mg/day Patients dose: 1 tab OD Once every day, every 8 AM
DURING:
Oral preparations are most effectively absorbed if administered 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals if gastric irritation occurs, administer with meals. Take tablet or capsule with a full glass of water or juice.
AFTER:
Encourage patient to comply with medication regimen. Take missed doses as soon as remembered within 12 hours; otherwise return to regular dosing schedule
