Oxacillin is a penicillinase-resistant penicillin antibiotic used to treat infections caused by penicillinase-producing staphylococci. It works by inhibiting cell wall synthesis during bacterial multiplication and resisting inactivation by penicillinase enzymes produced by some bacteria. Common potential side effects include thrombophlebitis. It is administered intravenously every 6 hours at a dosage of 500mg and requires verifying for allergies before use due to risk of hypersensitivity reactions.

Drug Name GENERIC NAME: Oxacillin BRAND NAME: Bactocill, Prostaphilin CLASSIFICATION: Lactamase resistant penicillins

Mechanism of Action A penicillinase resistant penicillin that inhibits cellwall synthesis during microorganism multiplication; bacteria resists penicillins by producing penicilllinase enzymes that convert penicillins to inactivate penecillic acids. Oxacillin resists these enzymes. Drug Class: Antibiotic Penicillinaseresistant penicillin Therapeutic Action: Bactericidal

Administration Dosage: 500mg Frequency: Q 6h Route: IV

Indications Systemic infections caused by penicillinaseproducing staphylococci

Contraindications Allergies to penicillins, cephalosporins or other allergens. Use cautiously with renal disorders, pregnancy, lactation (may cause diarrhea or candidiasis in infants)

Adverse Reactions Common: Thrombophebitis Uncommon: Neuropathy, neuromuscular irritability, lethargy, hallucination, anxiety, confusion, agitation, depression, dizziness, fatigue, oral lesions, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, enterocolitis, interstitial nephritis, nephropathy, thrombocytopenia , hemolytic anemia, anemia, hypersensitivity reactions

Nursing Responsibilities Verify ANST (After Negative Skin Test) before administration Use cautiously in patients with other drug allergy, especially to cephalosporins. Give 1-2 hours before or 2-3 hours after meals to prevent gastric irritation. Maintain epinephrine, IV fluids, vasopressors, bronchodilators and emergency equipment on standby in case of serious hypersensitivity reaction
