Airless Spray Application Troubleshooting Guide

This document provides a troubleshooting chart for common defects that can occur during airless spray application of protective coatings and their potential causes and suggested corrections. The chart lists defects such as runs and sags, streaks, too high film, dry over spray, excessive spray fog, pinholes, orange peel, and blistering. For each defect, it identifies possible causes such as improper spray technique, the gun being too close to the work piece, an incorrect or worn nozzle, excessive thinning of the paint, moisture on the surface, and offers recommendations for resolving the issue, such as changing the nozzle size, adjusting the distance and angle of the spray gun, or altering the paint viscosity by adding or reducing thinner.

AIRLESS SPRAY APPLICATION: TROUBLE SHOOTING CHART

DEFECT

CAUSE

SUGGESTED CORRECTION

Runs and Sags

- Improper spray technique

Avoid excessive wet film thickness and / or excessive thinning. The spray gun should be held at a distance about 1 ft. (30 cm) from the surface for general work. Hold gun at right angle to the surface and move in a straight line parallel to surface. In addition to the above suggestions, check spray nozzle for excessive wear or improper selection. Paint materials have a range of viscosity and solid contents below which it cannot dilute and still hold specified film thickness. Therefore, do not thin the paint unless absolutely necessary.

- Gun is too close to work piece

- Gun held at wrong angle to surface

- Excessive deposit

- Excessive dilution

Streaks

- Wrong nozzle - Nozzle is worn out - Incorrect overlapping of strokes - Too high viscosity

Select a smaller nozzle Select a new nozzle Follow the previous stroke accurately. Increase pressure / thin down the paint.

TECHNICAL DATA SHEET

AIRLESS SPRAY APPLICATION: TROUBLE SHOOTING CHART

Too high film

- Improper technique

See notes for Runs and Sags use a smaller nozzle. Hold the gun at right angle to the surface.

Dry over spray

- Excessive atomization, Nozzle too small, Improper technique

Reduce pressure. Use a large nozzle. Hold spray gun closer to work piece. Trigger gun at edges. Spray at right angles to work piece.

Excessive spray fog

- Excessive atomization - Paint thinned down too much

Reduce pressure Only the correct amount of thinner should be added.

Pinholes

- Paint film too heavy Poor atomization

Apply less wet film thickness. Increase pressure

Orange peel

- Paint not thinned sufficiently

Add correct amount of thinner.

Blistering

- Rust, oil or grease on surface

Degrease the surface properly before painting. Surface temperature must be above the dew point. Use a faster solvent.

- Moisture on or in the surface

- Solvents trapped under dried paint
