Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 Risk Factors

The document presents an ecologic model of diabetes mellitus type 2 in a patient. It identifies predisposing factors for the patient's condition including being female, 68 years old, having a family history of diabetes, having a diet high in sugars, and being slightly overweight. The model represents how the agent (glucose), host (patient), and environment (living conditions and economic status) interacted to increase the patient's risk of developing diabetes. The conclusion is that the patient's lifestyle and family history were key contributing factors for her diabetes.

Ecologic Model A.

Hypothesis Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 consists of an array of dysfunctions characterized by the inability of the cells of the body to absorbed the glucose and hyperglycemia resulting from the combination of resistance to insulin action, inadequate insulin secretion, and excessive or inappropriate glucagon secretion. It is also called adultonset diabetes. In the case of our patient MDB, she was diagnosed of DM when she was 58 years old. Her fondness in eating chocolates and cakes, and having a history of the said disease in the family predisposed her to acquiring it. B. Predisposing Factors 1. Host female (gestational diabetes) 68 years old family history of diabetes (grandmother to the father side) diet (fondness of eating cakes and chocolates)

2. Agent sugar (glucose) 3. Environment living conditions economic status

- female (gestational diabetes) - 68 years old - family history of diabetes (grandmother to the father side) - diet (fondness of eating cakes and chocolates) - slightly overweight

Diabetes Mellitus Type 2

- sugar (glucose)

- living conditions - economic status

C. Analysis The above model represents the relationship of the agent, host and environment in predisposing and leading the patient to having diabetes mellitus Type 2.

The risk of having Diabetes Mellitus is increased by:

Weight. Being overweight is a primary risk factor for type 2 diabetes. The more fatty tissue you have, the more resistant your cells become to insulin. Family history. The risk of type 2 diabetes increases if your parent or sibling has type 2 diabetes. Age. The risk of type 2 diabetes increases as you get older, especially after age 45. That's probably because people tend to exercise less, lose muscle mass and gain weight as they age. But type 2 diabetes is also increasing dramatically among children, adolescents and younger adults.

High blood pressure. Having blood pressure over 140/90mm Hg is linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

D. Conclusion It is therefore concluded that our patient, MDB, is suffering from Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 probably due to her lifestyle and having a history of the disease within the family. Other risk factors may also involve such as age and weight.
