Advancement Via Individual Determination

A.V.I.D.

Adelanto High School Grades 9-12 2014-2015

What is A.V.I.D.?
Advancement Via Individual Determination AVIDs mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing ALL students for college readiness and success in a global society.

Although AVID serves all students, it focuses on the least served students in the academic middle. The formula is simple - raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge.

The History of A.V.I.D.

Began in 1980 by Mary Catherine Swanson, San Diego, California Today A.V.I.D. is in 45 states and 16 countries 700,000 students in nearly 4,800 elementary and secondary schools

The AVID Student

AVID targets students in the academic middle (B, C, and even D students) who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, many are from low-income or minority families.

AVID is not an exclusive program. We work to include as many students in our class regardless of race, religion, creed or socioeconomic status. We want ALL students to have the opportunity to attend college and be successful.

How does A.V.I.D. work ?

Students who are often considered in the middle are placed in rigorous honors and Advanced Placement classes Those students then receive tutorial support

The AVID Tutorial

Twice a week college tutors come in and work with students in small group settings to provide support for the rigorous classes. Like a college study group. Utilizing Socrates methods of teaching (a questioning dialogue).
