Glass vs. Ceramics: Properties & Uses

Glass and ceramics are both made primarily from silica and obtained from the Earth's crust. While they share properties of being hard but brittle insulators, glass differs from ceramics in that it is transparent, softens when heated, and is impermeable, whereas ceramics are usually opaque, retain their shape at high temperatures, and can be porous.

Introduction

1. The raw materials for making glass and ceramics are obtained from the
Earths crust.
2. The main component of both glass and ceramics is silica or silicon dioxide,
SiO2.
3. Both glass and ceramics are used widely in our daily life to replace metals
because of the advantages above as well as their low cost of production.
4. Both glass and ceramics have the same properties as follow:
a) Hard but brittle
b) Inert to chemical reactions
c) Insulators of electricity
d) Poor conductions of heat and electricity
e) Withstand compression but not tension
f) Can be easily cleaned
5. The use of glass and ceramics also depends on their differences. Table
below shows the differences between glass and ceramics.

Glass

Ceramic

Transparent

Opaque

Softens when heated

High melting point, hence retains

shape on heating

Impermeable

Usually porous except when glazed
