Vietnamese Family Values: Elder Care

Living with adult children in old age aligns with Vietnamese cultural values of filial piety and family responsibility. As people age, their health declines and they require more care, which is best provided by family members who can offer love and companionship. Elders who live with family feel less lonely and abandoned than those in nursing homes. Additionally, adult children gain valuable life experiences and lessons from their parents and grandparents by living together. Both generations benefit from the company and support of one another through sharing a home in later life.

Topic 12.

Some people say that older people should live with

their adult children. Your opinion?
* In my view, I strongly agree that older people should live with their adult children in
later time.
Keeping the parents at home to care is appropriate to Vietnamese moral
values. Vietnamese as well as Eastern cultures place enormous value on family and
the elderly. It means that children have responsibility in caring their parents when
they get older. And until now, majority still respect and maintain these values.
Obviously, in Vietnam societies always have negative views to people who send their
parents to aging homes or nursing home.
In old age, people become sick and disabled due to declining health. That is
the reason why they can no longer live alone and need adult childrens help. In later
time, parents want most to have caring, sharing ties with their family. Parents enjoy
feeling needed and loved, and they are flattered when asked for advice. Thus, the
attention and care of family members will make the rest of the elderlys life become
more meaningful and happier. Obviously, Elders will feel loved and accepted if their
own children look after them in when they get trouble in ailments. When living in
aging home or nursing home, many people feel solitary and abandoned. They just
wish to be surrounded by the laugh of their descendents or simply play with their
grandchildren
Finally, experience is certainly the foremost attribute that adult children can
gain from their parents and grandparents. Children can definitely learn from the
vicissitudes of their parents' and grandparents' lives. While on the other side of the
argument, children whose elderly parents do not live with them will remain deprived
of their experiences of life. Sometimes, if parents are still relatively healthy, they
may be able to baby-sit or help around the house.
