Stress Strain Problems

The document contains 9 problem exercises involving calculating stress, strain, force, and other mechanical properties for various materials and structures when subjected to tensile, compressive, and shear forces. The problems include determining stress and strain for steel and aluminum shafts stretched by various forces, calculating stress and strain for beams under load, finding force required to shear pins and cut holes, and computing properties like yield strength and elongation from data from a tensile test.

  • Problem Exercises: Contains a series of engineering problems related to stress, strain, and material elasticity.

PROBLEM EXERCISES

1. A carbon steel shaft with 10 mm diameter and 2 m

long is stretched with 20 kN force. It extends by 0.2
mm. Determine the stress and strain. Ans: 254.6 MPa,
0.0001mm/mm.

2. A long aluminium pin is 0.5 m long and 5 mm
diameter. It is stretched 0.06 mm by 3 kN force.
Determine the stress and strain. Ans: 152.8MPa ,
0.00012.

4. A long beam with 500 mm length and 10 mm
diameter is subjected to 50 kN load. It stretched to
505 mm. Determine the stress and strain of the
beam. Ans: 636.6 MPa, 0.01 mm/mm.

5. A High speed steel bar is stressed to 280 MPa. The
dimension of the bar is 240 mm long and 80 mm
diameter. Given that the modulus of elasticity is 205
GPa, determine the strain and the applied force. Ans:
0.00136 mm/mm, 1.407MN.

6. Calculate the force needed to shear a pin of 8 mm

diameter. Given that the ultimate shear stress is 60
MPa. Ans: 3016N

7. A punch cuts a hole of sheet steel with 30 mm
diameter and 2 mm thick. Given that the ultimate
shear stress is 55 MPa, determine the force required.
Ans: 10.37kN

8. A test in a tensile test has a gauge length = 70 mm
and diameter = 17.95 mm. During the test, the
specimen yields at 50,000 N load. The gauge length =
70.5 mm at yield point. The maximum load = 85,000 N
is reached when the gauge length = 73.2 mm.
Calculate, yield strength, elongation percentage at
yield point, modulus of elasticity, ultimate tensile
strength. (Ans: 197.58MPa, 0.7143%, 27660.65MPa,
335.896MPa.)

9. A column of 3m long and 0.4m diameter is
compressed by 50MN load perpendicular to its
diameter. Calculate the compressive stress and
strain. Given that the modulus of elasticity is 200 GPa.
Determine the new length of the column after
compression. (Ans: 2994mm)
