Special vs. General Appearance in Court

There are two types of appearances in court: general appearances and special appearances. A general appearance occurs when a defendant raises any issues beyond objecting to the court's jurisdiction over their person, such as filing an answer or demurrer. This subjects the defendant to the full jurisdiction of the court. A special appearance is strictly limited to objecting to jurisdiction and does not submit the defendant to the court's authority. Any action beyond objecting to jurisdiction, such as requesting an extension or challenging the merits of the case, constitutes a general appearance.
