Foreword
‘This Part of BS 3288 has been prepared under the direction
of the Power Electrical Engineering Standards Policy
Committee and it supersedes BS 3288 : Part 2: 1977,
which is withdrawn.
In this revision an effort has been made to allow as much
freedom as possible in the design while maintaining inter:
changeability with existing designs and compatibility with
other fittings. This has led to the omission of many non
critical dimensions and, in some cases, one drawing with 2
table of dimensions now covers a series of fittings.
A range of fittings with a mechanical rating of 300 kN
fhas been introduced. The socket fittings in this range use
the split pin security clip rather than the W security clip.
In all fittings with a pin, washer and split pin,
a bolt, nut and split pin has been given as an alterni
‘Such fittings are to be given a suffix A as part of their
designation, e.g. shackle 18/29 is complete with pin,
washer and split pin and shackle 15/294 is complete with
bolt, nut and split pin.
Other modifications include the addition of the 400 kN.
sag adjuster assembly; the increase of the range of paralle!
and single links; the provision of details of a suitable
interconnecting shackle in the drawings of eye-links;
the inclusion of square section tower-shackles; and the
rationalization of the range of insulator pins to reflect
current practice.
Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself
‘confer immunity from legal obligations.Contents

of insulator and conductor fittings for overhead power
lines.
‘The dimensions are given in figures 1 to 89 and tables 1
1035.
NOTE 1. Typica errngements of sag adjuter assemblies are
shown in figures 77 1082.
[NOTE 2. The titles of the publications referred to in this standard
‘are listed on the inside back cover
2 Performance and general requirements
The fittings shall comply with the appropriate requi
ments of BS 3288 : Part 1
3 Dimensions and tolerances
The following tolerances shall apply to the dimensions
given in figures 1 to 89 and tables 1 to 36, except for
dimensions given in parentheses or indicated by the suffix
‘max.’ or ‘min.’ or for dimensions for gauged parts, gauges
fr screw threads (see clauses 4 to 6):
dimensions up to and including 35 mm: + 0.7 rm
dimensions greater than 35 mm: + 2%,
NOTE. Dimensions shown in parentheses ae given for guidance only.
All dimensions except diameters of bolts and pins, thick-
‘esses of rolled plates and widths and thicknesses
rolled rectangular material shall apply after galvanizing.
For the exceptions stated, the dimensions shall apply
before galvanizing. All holes shall be parallel sided.
4 Insulator pins
4.1 Reference numbers
‘The reference number for each type of insulator pin
‘and each type of head shall be as given in table 1.
4.2 Dimensions
‘The dimensions of every insulator pin shall be in accordance
with the appropriate figure, as given in table 1.
4.3 Gauges
The accuracy of the dimensions of the head shall be
checked after galvanizing by means of the gauge referred
10 in table 1 and shown in figure 6.

4.4 Shanks
‘The thread on the shank, before galvanizing, shall be ISO
‘matric coarse pitch series ‘free’ class (B g) complying with
BS 3643 : Part 2. The effective thread on the shank shall
bbe not less than 45 mm long for the 60 mm shank and not,
less than 75 mm long for the 130 mm shank,
NOTE. For the purposes ofthis subelause, “effective thread’ means
‘that the thread, ster galvanizing, takes @ nut forthe distance rated.
4.5 Nuts
‘The external dimensions of the nut, before galvanizing,
shall comply with BS 4190 and it shall have a thread,
‘cut after galvanizing, complying with BS 3643 : Part 2,
but sufficiently oversize to accommodate the threaded part
of the galvanized shank, as specified in 4.4. The increase
in diameter to comply with this requirement shall not
however exceed 0.4 mm. The threads of nuts shall be oiled.
4.6 Failing loads
The minimum failing load of the pin shall be 0.7 KN (pilot,
pins only), 5 kN or 10 KN, as given in table 1.
5 Line post insulator studs
5.1 Studs
‘The shank length shall be measured below the seating
surface of the metal base. The thread on the stud, before
galvanizing, shall be ISO metric coarse pitch series ‘free’
Class (8 g) complying with BS 3643 : Part 2. The effective
thread on the stud shall be not less than 45 mm long for
the 50 mm shank and not less than 75 mm long for the
130 mm shank.
NOTE 1. The preferred diameter of line port inulator studs is
:22:mm, with alternative shank lengths of 80 mm and 130 mn,
NOTE 2. For the purpoter of this subs fective thread
‘means thatthe thread, after galvanizing, cakes» nut for the distance
fated.
NOTE 3. When tine post intulator studs are ordered separstely,
‘care should be takan to ensure thatthe upper part ofthe stud is
suitable forthe insulator
5.2 Nuts
‘The external dimensions of nuts before galvanizing shall
comply with BS 4190 and they shall have threads, cut after
galvanizing, complying with BS 3643 : Part 2 but suffi
ciently oversize to accommodate the threaded part of the,
‘galvanized pin shank as specified in 4.4. The increase in
iameter to meet this requirement shall not however exceed
0.4 mm, The threads of nuts shall be oiled,BS 3288 : Part 2:1990
