FRACTURE MECHANICS
Time: 2 hours Max. Marks: 60
All questions carry equal marks

1. Explain how the effect of small notches or cracks can be analyzed in terms of
fracture toughness.

2. Discuss with neat sketches of microstructural models of crack initiation under

fatigue stages I, II and III crack growth.

3. Discuss in detail the following:

a) Creep resistant materials.
c) Three principle ways in which fatigue stresses develop.
d) Ductile – Brittle transition temperature.
e) Coffin – Marson law.

4. Sketch and explain the cumulative damage theory to explain fatigue failure.

5. Write short notes on different modes of crack opening.

6. Explain the following terms in connection with design of machine members

subjected to variable loads:
a) Endurance Limit.
b) Size Factor.
c) Notch sensitivity.

7. What is mean by endurance strength of a material? How do the size and surface
condition of a component and type of load affect such strength? Write a note on the
influence of various factors of the endurance limit of a ductile material.
