Tiny Frogs and Teamwork Lessons

The document tells a story about tiny frogs who hold a competition to climb a tall tower, with most frogs giving up but one deaf frog reaching the top, teaching the lesson to not listen to negative people and believe in yourself. It then provides lessons learned from geese who fly in a V formation, such as the benefits of teamwork, leadership, encouragement, and support for each other.

THE STORY ABOUT THE

TINY FROGS….

1
There once was a bunch of tiny
frogs,...

… Who arranged a running competition.

2
The goal was to reach the top of
a very high tower.

3
• A big crowd had gathered around the
tower to see the race and cheer on the
contestants...

4
• The race began...

5
Honestly:
No one in the crowd really believed that the
tiny frogs would reach the top of the tower.
You heard statements such as:
"Oh, WAY too difficult!!
They will NEVER make it to the top."
or:
"Not a chance that they will succeed. The tower
is too high!"

6
The tiny frogs began collapsing. One by
one...
... Except for those who in a fresh tempo
were climbing higher and higher...
The crowd continued to yell
"It is too difficult!!! No one will
make it!"

7
More tiny frogs got tired and gave up...
...But ONE continued higher
and higher and higher...
This one wouldn’t give up!

8
At the end everyone else had given up
climbing the tower. Except for the one
tiny frog who after a big effort was the
only one who reached the top!
THEN all of the other tiny frogs naturally
wanted to know how this one frog
managed to do it?

9
• A contestant asked the tiny frog how
the one who succeeded had found the
strength to reach the goal?

10
• It turned out...
• That the winner was DEAF!!!!

11
The wisdom of this story is:
Never listen to other people’s tendencies to be
negative or pessimistic...
…cause they take your most wonderful dreams
and wishes away from you. The ones you
have in your heart!

Always think of the power words have.

Because everything you hear and read will affect your actions!

12
ALWAYS be…

POSITIVE!

And above all:

Be DEAF when people tell YOU that YOU can not
fulfil YOUR dreams!
Always think:
I can do this!

13
Motivate Your Subordinates
• Motivation – “ A decision making process
through which the individual chooses the
desired outcomes and sets in motion the
behavior appropriate to acquiring them”

• Motives – “ Learned influences on human

behavior that lead us to pursue particular
goals because they are valued”

14
• Motives and Motivation are terms that are commonly
used (in different contexts) to mean

• Goals or outcomes that individuals find desirable

– E.g. we say that outcomes such as obtaining payment,
increasing our status, meeting people etc are desirable motives
for doing something

• Mental Process of choosing our desired outcomes

– E.g. we weigh up in our minds what the likelihood is of achieving
the desired outcome as a way of deciding whether or not make
the effort

• A Social Process
– The way in which organization get us to put in more effort

15
Why Should Organizations Bother
with Motivation???
• Motivated workers are characterized by :
• Higher Productivity
• Better Quality Work with Less Waste
• A greater sense of Urgency
• More Feedback and Suggestions made for Improvements
• More Feedback demanded from Superiors
• Working at 80% - 95% of their ability ( Compared Poorly
– motivated employees who may work at only 20% - 30%
of ability)

16
Individual Behavior - at the heart
of human Motivation
• Every individual has a set of needs
• Every individual has a different set of goals
• Individuals behave in a way as to satisfy their needs and fulfill their
goals
• Organizations are in a position to offer some of the satisfactions that
individuals are seeking
– Relationships
– Belonging
– Intellectual stimulation
– Mental / Physical Challenge
– Self Progress
• Organizations can, therefore influence people to behave in a certain
way by offering them a way to satisfy their needs and fulfill their
goals.
• The Process of influencing an individual to behave in a certain way
is called MOTIVATION

17
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Fulfillment of personal potential Self
Actualization
Need for Independence, recognition,
status etc Esteem Needs

Need for relationships,

Affection, Belonging Social Needs

Need for security, Safety Needs

order, freedom etc

Need for food and

Physiological Needs
Shelter

18
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – How
does it Work??
• A person will start at the bottom of the hierarchy (Pyramid)
and will initially seek to satisfy basic needs (e.g. Food)
• Once these needs are satisfied, they are no longer a
motivation. The individual moves up to the next level
• Safety needs at work could include physical safety (e.g.
Protective clothing) as well as Protection against un
employment / sickness etc
• Social needs recognize the people want to belong to a group
• Esteem Needs reflect the fact that people wish to have the
respect and esteem of others. A promotion at work might
achieve this
• Self Actualization is about how people think about them
selves – often measured by success and challenge at work

19
Morale and Team Motivation
• What is “ Morale” ??
– Morale relates to how a group feels
– Morale denotes a “ State of Mind” or “ Spirit of a
Group” Morale is particularly relevant in relation to the
discipline and confidence of a group
– Morale can be linked to satisfaction, since the team “
Low Morale” implies dissatisfaction
• How Can Morale be Measured??
– Low Productivity
– High Labor Turnover
– Stress

20
To Improve Productivity

What Does You Mean by

22
If between friends and partners
we were geese...
Ah!

23
The next season,
when you see the geese migrating,
going to a warmer place,
to sort the winter...
Pay attention that they fly in a “V” formation
Maybe you will be interested in knowing
Why they do it this way...

24
By flying in a “V” formation....

25
The whole flock increases
the flight efficiency by 71%

Compared to just one bird flying alone

26
Lesson 1:
Sharing the same direction
and working as a team, get us to
the destination quicker and
easier.
By helping ourselves, the
accomplishments are greater!.

27
When a goose leaves the
formation..

28
He feels the resistance of the air and the
difficulties of flying alone....

29
Then, he quickly comes back to the formation
to take advantage of the the flock’s power
in front of him ..

30
Lesson 2:

By staying in tune and united beside

those who
are going in the same direction,
the effort will be less.

It will be easier and pleasing to reach the

goals,

Everyone will be inclined to accept and

give help.
31
When the leader goose gets tired of flying...

32
... He goes to the end of the “V” formation.
While another goose takes the lead.

33
Lesson 3:

To share the leadership,

There must be mutual respect between us

all the time...

Sharing the hardest problems

and tasks..

Gathering our abilities and

combining our faculties,
talents and resources….

34
The geese flying on a “V” formation, they quack
to encourage to the ones in the front.

In that way, they keep the same speed.

35
Lesson 4:

When there is courage and encouragement,

the progress is greater..

A timely word of encouragement,

always motivates, helps and strengthens..
It produces the best of benefits...

36
When a goose gets sick, is injured
or gets tired ,

37
And he must leave
the formation...

38
Other geese leave the formation too,
and they fly with him to help him out
and protect him.
They remain with him
until he dies
or he is able to fly again.
They reach their bevy
or they just make another “V” formation.

39
Lesson 5:

Let’s stay
beside each other
no matter what the differences.

Specially in times of difficulty

and great challenges..

40
If we bond together and support each
other..
If we make true the spirit of
teamwork..
Regardless of our differences, we can
rise to meet our challenge.

If we are aware of the feeling of

sharing..

LIFE WILL BE EASIER

AND THE PASSING OF YEARS
MORE FULFILLING ..

41
MY FRIENDS AND PARTNERS...
LET’S BE LIKE THE GEESE!!!
