MKM320 Continuum Mechanics 2010
Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering
University of Pretoria
Homework Assignment 11
Assigned: 19 October 2010 Due: In class, 1 November 2010
• You may work in groups of up to 4 students. Remember that each student needs to be able
to do each problem independently in order to be successful in tests and exams.
• Please make sure that your work is neat and legible, and that you show all working.
Question 1
For the plane elasticity problems shown in Figure P7.3 of the textbook (p. 266), write the boundary
conditions and classify them into Type I, Type II or Type III.
Question 2
An external hydrostatic pressure of magnitude p is applied to the surface of a spherical body of
radius b with a concentric rigid spherical inclusion of radius a (shown in Figure P7.13.) Determine
the displacement and stress fields in the spherical body.
Question 3
Investigate what problem is solved by the Airy stress function

Φ= xy − 2 + y 2 .

Question 4
Show that the Airy stress function

Φ = 3 x y − 3b y + 2b − y y − 2b

satisfies the compatibility condition. Determine the stress field and find out what problem it corre-
sponds to when applied to the region −b ≤ y ≤ b and 0 ≤ x ≤ L.
Question 5
For the rotating thick-walled cylinder problem which we worked through in class (§7.7.2):
(a) Derive the general expressions for σrθ and σθθ .
(b) Plot the distributions of σrr , σrθ and σθθ as a function of r/a for the case when ω = 10 rad/s,
pa = 100 MPa, pb = 0 MPa, and b = 2a.
1
(c) Plot the distributions of σrr /pa , σrθ /pa and σθθ /pa as a function of r/a for the case when
ω = 0 rad/s, pb = 0.5pa and b = 2a.
You can plot using Octave, Matlab, a spreadsheet or another software method of your choice.
