Instructions on How to Tap a Keg

Background Information
Kegs come in different sizes, and everyone knows BIGGER is always BETTER. However, this is important
depending on the location of where you will store the keg.

•Half barrel = 1984 oz (168 cans)

•Quarter barrel = 992oz (84 cans)
•Home Brew = 640oz (53 cans)

Preparation
1. The first step is to decide how much beer you want to serve.
2. Next you need to choose what kind you would like to buy. Prices vary depending on quality and
you can find these by calling your local liquor store. After paying a refundable deposit, the liquor
store will give you the correct tap for your keg.
3. Transportation is very important after buying a keg. It is crucial that the keg is stabilized to prevent
too much foam.
4. Decide where you want to serve your keg, place the keg there and let it stand for two hours or so
to let the foam settle.
5. To keep the keg cold, you need to make sure the keg is setting on ice. This can be done in multiple
ways, but the easiest way is to put it in a garbage can with ice on the bottom.

The Tapping Process Step 6

6. Remove the cap or seal which is located on the top of the keg.
7. Look for the notches on the tap and line them up with the
corresponding slits located in the hole at the top of the keg.
8. Firmly push the tap down and simultaneously twist it clockwise
Step 8
until it locks into place.
9. If there is a pressure release valve, push it downward to
maintain the pressure in the keg.
10. After pressure release valve has been place on keg, screw
pump on to the top of the valve. You will need to pump the tap to
build up pressure but only as needed. You do not want to over Step 9
pump.
11. You will need to pump the tap to build up pressure but only as
needed. You do not want to over pump, for best results.
12. Open the spout fully and pour roughly four cups (or until the Step 10
foam subsides) of beer to purge the foam.
13. The keg is now tapped. LET THE PARTY BEGIN!
Step 12

Returning the keg

14. When the keg runs dry, untwist and remove the tap.
15. Return the keg and tap to the liquor store to receive
the money from your deposit.
