Benefits of Single-Sex Classrooms

Nelson Romero chose to write a research paper on how single-sex classrooms provide a better learning environment than co-ed classrooms. From his personal experience attending an all-male high school, he found he was able to concentrate more in class without distractions from girls. There was also less drama. A study separating middle school students into single-sex classrooms in Alabama saw attendance rise by 2% and fewer office referrals, with benefits including the ability for teachers to tailor lessons to specific gender needs and decreases in discipline problems and increases in academic achievement.

Research Paper
For my research paper I chose to write about single sex classrooms are more
advantageous to learning and should be promoted. Coming from a single sexed school myself I
understand the advantages from this statement. Single sexed classrooms provide a better learning
environment for the students. From my personal experience I found that my transfer from a
public school into a private all male high school was very different. I concentrated more on the
teacher in class then the pretty girls. There was also less drama in the school. By this I mean
know guy was talking to another guy’s girlfriend, know gossip was going around the school, no
one cared how they dressed or looked and I never had to impress anyone. In St Josephs everyone
got along. In the class room I was always trying to beat the other guys in my class grades. It’s
human nature for men to be competitive and we all strived to be better than one another.

In Hankins Middle School in Theodore, Alabama a study was done by separating middle
school students in the class room. They separated them in all the core class and were not even
aloud to eat lunch together. From this study attendance rose by two percent and less office
referrals were given out. They found many pros from this study “Teachers can spend extra time
with topics that boys or girls may struggle with. Classes can be differentiated by gender.
Students may branch out and try new things without the other gender to impress. Discipline
problems decrease. Academic achievement increases. It is inexpensive. Separating the two
genders does not require changing walls or hiring more teachers.” (Pytel)
