Mechanism of action and indications (Why med ordered) Nursing Implications (what to focus on)
Useful in a variety of GI complaints, including Contraindications/warnings/interactions -
Hyperacidity, Indigestion, GERD, Heartburn. Neutralize Severe abdominal pain, especially if accompanied by
gastric acid following dissolution in gastric contents. fever, renal failure
Inactivate peppsin if pH is raised to 4 or above. Common side effects – Constipation, diarrhea
Neutralization of gastric acid with healing of ulcers and
decrease in associated pain. GI distress.

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal Lab value alterations caused by medicine – Serum
medicines (ask patient specifically) – Sugar intolerance phosphate, potassium, and calcium levels. May cause
increased serum calcium and decreased serum phosphate
concentrations.
Be sure to teach the patient the following about this
medication – watch for GI bleeding, don’t take within 2
hr of taking other medications.
Nursing Process- Assessment Assessment Why would you hold or Evaluation Check after
(Pre-administration assessment) – Heartburn not give this med? – Severe giving – Relief of gastric
and indigestion as well as location, duration, abdominal pain pain and irritation
