Abstract The antioxidant activity of medicinal plants has received increasing attention for its potential in prevention of different human diseases and studies have shown that phenolic compounds, mainly flavonoids, have important antioxidant capacity and can be superoxide scavengers. Species of the genus Ficus are used in ethnomedicine around the world and some authors have reported the antioxidant potential of species of this genus. Antioxidant potential of aqueous extracts of Ficus nevesiae leaves, native to Brazil, were measured using the free radical scavenging activity method using 1,1-diphenyl picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), F. nevesiae showed that the aqueous extracts present lower free radical scavenging activity with IC50 = 190.67 g/ml, while the butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) has an IC50 equal to 3.29 g/ml. Total antioxidant activity was determined according to the assay based on the decrease in absorbance of -carotene by the sample. The aqueous extract of F. nevesiae at the concentration of 100 g/ml showed 37.9% degradation inhibition of -carotene. Total phenolic content was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteau method and reported as the tannic acid equivalent (TAE). The aqueous extract has 26.55 g TAE/g. Also investigated was the presence of the principal groups of secondary metabolites by CCD, finding flavonoids and tannins in the aqueous extract. More studies studies on safety and efficacy are necessary for safe use of Ficus nevesiae in the treatment of human diseases involving antioxidants. Keywords: Ficus nevesiae; antioxidant activity; DPPH
