The common steps
that biologist and other scientists use to gather information and answer questions.

Steps in Scientific Methods
Observation and Question Hypothesis Experiment Collecting Data Conclusion Report Results
Steps in Scientific Methods
Observing - Something is observed that
hasnt been noticed before. Questioning asking or wondering about the perceived natural occurrence
Steps in Scientific Methods
Hypothesis - an explanation for a question or a problem that can be formally tested.
A prediction is what is expected to happen based on the hypothesis
Steps in Scientific Methods
Experimenting -
testing the hypothesis by collecting data under controlled conditions.
Steps in Scientific Methods
Experimenting
Controlled Experiments - (most often used in laboratory settings) Control group - the group in which all conditions are kept the same. Experimental group only one condition is changed
Steps in Scientific Methods
Experimenting
Independent Variable - the condition in the experiment that is changed Dependent Variable - the condition that is measured as a result of the change
Steps in Scientific Methods
Collecting Data
Descriptive - written data, journals, observations Quantitative numerical data, charts and graphs
Steps in Scientific Methods
Drawing Conclusions Analyze data to see if hypothesis is supported
Steps in Scientific Methods
Forming the Theory - A theory is a hypothesis
that is supported by a large body of scientific evidence after repeat experimentation Reporting Results - Results and conclusions of experiments are shared with the scientific community
Peer Review scientist read and critique work to make sure it is honest and credible
Technology
Technology - the application of scientific
research to society's needs and problems Advances in technology lead to advances in science Advances in science lead to advances in technology
Can technology solve all problems? What types of countries would most likely
have technological advancements?
