Megamind Movie Review

Megamind is an animated film about a supervillain named Megamind who defeats his nemesis, the superhero Metro Man. With no hero to challenge, Megamind becomes bored and depressed. He tries to find a new purpose and ends up developing feelings for a human woman named Roxanne. The film explores what would happen if the roles of hero and villain were reversed. It follows familiar superhero tropes but keeps the story lighthearted and fun for children while still engaging adults. Overall, the reviewer finds the film passable but not outstanding entertainment for an hour and a half.

Megamind

(2010)
I try to get around to seeing most animated films, unless they just look like utter drek or involve chipmunks, but some attract me less than others (naturally), and, well, both the pitch of Megamind superheroes, not a genre thats been done well in animated films (I disliked The Incredibles) and the cast Will Ferrell and Tina Fey, amongst others, loved by many but not by me kept me from caving in and checking it out until very recently. The premise is, essentially, what if Lex Luthor beat Superman? Its not a bad idea as these things go, even though as one would expect they overdo it with the origin story and voice-over narration with Megamind (Ferrell) in an attempt to get the kiddies to like him (he has a gigantic blue head, so youd think theyd already be inclined). His nemesis is the much-loved superhero Metro Man (Brad Pitt), whom he always challenges and always loses to, until the surprising day that he wins and vanquishes the hero. The movie then asks, what is evil without good, which it proceeds to answer in a mostly engaging fashion. They hew pretty close to the Superman idea, even having a Lois Lane type (Tina Fey) and a Jimmy Olsen-ish cameraman (Jonah Hill), and ultimately the story is a positive one. Most of the animation and production design is okay, though I particularly liked Minion (David Cross), a hyper-intelligent fish who runs around in a robot ape suit and is extraordinarily loyal to Megamind; hes also great fun. Metro City (which, in the best gag in the movie, Megamind continually pronounces meTRAcity, rhyming with velocity) is typically shiny and modern (at least until they start trashing the place), and all of the characters are big-eyed cute, the way you would expect in a kids film. The voice acting is all pretty good. Brad Pitt sort of dips into Elvis a bit with Metro Man, and everyone else is either acceptable or very good. Sometimes I dont think its fair that we get celebrities to do voice acting, as they already have highly successful day jobs, but if theyre going to be this good, that kind of takes some of the air out of my argument; Ferrell is eminently enjoyable here (more than I ever find him in his live-action roles). Megamind is more for the kids; theres less for grownups to enjoy here, though the movie is fun enough. Its no standout, like, say, Wall-E, but neither is it an embarrassment, and I would think those who enjoy the superhero genre in general will find a few laughs here. Not great, but not bad, an amiable way to pass an hour and a half. August 2, 2012
