My State Notebook 1. Maps of Your State A. One showing regions/rivers B. One showing major cities C.

One showing Native American Tribes D. One showing our state/country/continent (I show a map of the origin of our state, too, since it is one of the original 13 colonies. We print out a map showing the original colonies and label our state.)

Symbols & Drawings A. Choose 3-5 state symbols and write a report on each. Include pictures of them. (bird, mammal, tree, flower, fish, rock, vegetable, etc.) B. Create a chart, graph, or table of something about your state. (like population, rainfall, average temp., products, elevation, etc.) C. A copy of your State Song, State Toast, State Motto, Slogans, and Nicknames.

Native Americans

A. Choose a tribe from a region of your state. Draw and write a summary of how they lived, hunted, the food they ate, thier language, how they dressed, what their homes looked like, how they survived each season, etc.

Early Settlers

A. Make a timeline showing the earliest events to the present. Make note of key explorers, wars, major events, and great inventions/inventors. B. Make pages for each region (or just the region you live in) on how those regions were settled and by whom. Describe their way of life at those times. C. Battles of your state. List them along with the year or label the battles on your State map.

Natural Resources A. List 3 natural resources and write about their importance. B. Write about one State or National Park in your region where you live. (or close by) (Plan a fieldtrip there when you finish your notebook or before you write about it.)

Collections/Copies A. Magazine or Newspaper article. Summarize at least one per region. Include article with it. B. Recipes using a State product (one per region) C. Photos of places in your state that you have visited.....choose some from each region. (We add this to the very end of our notebooks for the conclusion)

7.

Writings

A. Make a travel brochure for your favorite region of your state.... Make your visitors/readers excited about going to your state's destination! (Be sure to include the physical characteristics, historical sites, climate, attractions, lodging, etc.) B. Interview someone who was born and raised in your state and write a summary of the interview. C. Create a Haiku, Cinquain, and a Diamante about your State.

Biography A. Write a biography of one important person from your State. (At least one page) B. Write a report on one important place in your State. ( At least one page) (Include pictures if you can with both of these)

Once you have finished everything from the outline, make a Table of Contents for the beginning of your Notebook, number each page, and put them in order. 4th Grade State Study Notebook Outline Murrayshire Academy

If you are wanting to add this Notebook as a grade this is what I follow: (I type up a State Notebook Evaluation Page with date and fill out the possible points and points earned giving you a score for their final State Project Grade.

We use the library as much as possible. There are so many resources online with videos and games, too.
