(b) Study Source B
How far does Source B prove that large families result from a
lack of family planning? EYA [6m]
Source B prove that large families result from lack of family planning to
a large extent. I can infer from Source B that many of those with large
families did not practice proper family planning. Source B tells me that
“there was a Chinese who ad 19 pregnancies before she found her way
to a family clinic”. Also, when women were ask why they had many
children, their “common reply was ‘I don’t know what to do.’” This
means that many women had many children, as they did not have
access to proper family planning strategies. These women had no
knowledge of the negative consequences of having a large family on
them and for Singapore economy.
Sources C and F supports what Source B say. I can infer from Source C
that there was no family planning before this poster was published.
Source C is a poster showing a child holding onto a one dollar bill.
Below this picture, the fine print states that “Singapore wants all
married couples to have no more than two children”. The government
also advised the people to “call the nearest family planning centre”.
This means that Singapore had many large families and the
government published this poster to encourage its people to have
smaller families. This is to help the economy to become stronger in
order to meet the people’s needs. Therefore, before this poster was
published, due to the lack of awareness of family planning, families
were much larger. I can infer from source F that not all women practice
family planning. In Source F, Singapore Health Minister said that there
were still the “remaining 30% who had not taken to family planning…”
He also mentioned that “statistics showed that about 90% of all
married women…did not practice family planning”. This means that
despite the efforts of the government in encouraging family planning,
there were still women who choose not to practice it and continued to
have many children. Therefore, large families are due to lack of family
planning by these women.
However, Source B does not prove that large families are due to a lack
of family planning to a small extent. Source E does not support what
Source B says, I can infer from Source E that large families may be due
to other reasons other than a lack of family planning. Source E says
that people with “higher income may have even large families”. It was
also mentioned in the Straits Times that now they need to “direct
(family planning) to…the immediate post-war generation who have
reach a marriageable age”. This means that despite having the
government encouraging family planning to all Singaporean families,
there are other compelling reasons such as traditional beliefs and
having the ability to support more children that would lead to larger
families. Hence, large families may not necessary be due to a lack of
family planning but may be the preference of married couples in
Singapore.
Although Source E does not support what Source B says, Source C and
F both supports Source B, that large families is due to a lack of family
planning. From my contextual knowledge, Singapore met with the
‘babies boom’ in the post-war period and this has led to a rapid
increase in the population. With limited resources and a pre-developed
economy, Singapore had to ensure that there was enough time and
resources to build Singapore economically and socially. A large family
was due to a lack of family knowledge consequences of large families
and benefits of having smaller families. Therefore, the Singapore
government made use of several strategies to promote family planning
to all Singaporean studies from 1966 to 1981 to manage Singapore’s
population then.
Comparison
Extent
-some / certain extent [X]
Large / small extent [tick]
No basics of comparison
- they are similar in content [X]
- I can infer from Source C that higher income groups may also
have large families. I can also infer from Source D that lower
income groups tend to have larger families. [X]
(Basis of comparison: They are different in the target groups for
family planning) [tick]
e.g. Source C and D are different in the type of target groups
they are lookin at in promoting family planning. While I can infer
from Source C that higher income groups may have large
families but I can infer from Source D that lower income groups
tend to have larger families.
