The department is located at the Mount Sinai Hospital site (14th floor). The department has approximately 100 medical, technical, scientific, and support staff. The principal functions of the department are as follows: Clinical bacteriology Mycology Virology Molecular Diagnostic Testing Infectious Disease Serology Infection Control Molecular typing, Infection Control These services are provided to all of our clients depending on the scope of the contract we have with them. We also fulfill the following: Provide timely and value-added professional consultation to clinicians and professionals in our client and home institutions Promote enhanced patient care and reduced length of stay by the use of appropriate testing and continuous quality improvement Provide medical, scientific continuing education for University of Toronto post graduate and graduate students, undergraduate medical and dental students, fellows, elective and selective students and technical education for community college medical laboratory technology students To conduct peer-reviewed and commercial contract-based research to meet the key priorities of the department and customers. The department has close contact with the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Mount Sinai and University Health Network (formerly Toronto Medical Laboratories). We share the same Laboratory Information Systems and meet regularly to discuss items of mutual interest.
