Copeland Scroll Compressors

Low and Medium Temperature Compressors Foodservice Refrigeration
Smooth Scroll Movement: Less sound and vibration results in a quieter work environment. Less potential for refrigerant leaks means lower maintenance costs. Fewer Moving Parts: Improved compressor reliability for demanding foodservice applications with fewer breakdowns and lower maintenance costs. Energy Efficiency: Scroll compressors offer the highest energy efficiency levels to reduce energy costs. Up to 20% more energy efficient than a standard reciprocating compressor. Scroll Member Compliance: Excellent liquid refrigerant handling and debris tolerance improves reliability. Smaller Footprint and Lighter: Easier installation and maintenance lowers service costs. Superior Start/Stop Capability: Increases reliability and life of refrigeration system

Typical Walk-in* Operational-Cost Comparison: Reciprocating vs. Scroll Compressors

Reciprocating Cooling capacity Compressor EER Power consumption Average price/kWh Daily operational cost (17 hrs./day) Annual operational cost
*Walk-in volume=1,217ft.

Scroll 11,292 BTUs/hr. 5.8 BTUs/W-hr. 1,929 W $0.08/kWh $2.62 $956

11,292 BTUs/hr. 4.8 BTUs/W-hr. 2,352 W $0.08/kWh $3.20 $1,168

Annual savings per walk-in cooler with scroll = $212 (18%)

Energy-Efficient Design
Because there are no pistons to compress gas, scroll compressors achieve 100 percent volumetric efficiency, which provides reduced energy costs in many applications. During operation centrifugal force maintains nearly continuous compression and constant, leak-free contact (see below). Separation of suction and discharge gases reduces heat-transfer loss.
