Wauseon Indians Winter 13 ABC All-Stars Take To Awards Recently Announced The Court In Wauseon
By: Mitchell Peebles THE VILLAGE REPORTER The prom fund of the Wauseon Junior class was given a boost when the 13 ABC All-Star basketball team took on the faculty members of Wauseon High School, under the name The Wauseon Thunder. The proceeds from this event were donated to the juniors in order to help buy materials for this years prom, which will have the theme Party at Gatsbys. Teachers, coaches, and administrators from the school district comprised the team. Wauseon High school Principal Keith Leatherman, Athetic Director Matt Hutchinson, and Head boys basketball coach Chad Burt were just a few of the faculty members who laced up their basketball sneakers to take on members of the 13 Action News crew, including Anchor Lee Conklin, Iteam member Shaun Hagerty, and meteorologist Ross Ellet, along with members of the production crew. The contest may have only been an exhibition, but you wouldnt have known it by the energy level of the students in attendance. The students jokingly taunted the news crew, yelling Whos that!? during the player introductions, and when it became obvious that the Wauseon Faculty was going to come away with the victory, they chanted Start the news van!, changing the word of the popular Start the bus! chant used in the regular season, but of course, the taunting was all in good fun, as the students appreciated the crew helping the Junior class to raise money. It really meant a lot to have them spend their time and energy to help us out, Junior Clayton Peebles said It was an entertaining and fun way to help us raise money so we can put on a fantastic prom. Plus, its always fun to see our teachers out of their comfort zones. The most valuable player for the Wauseon Thunder was current boys Junior Varsity Basketball Coach and former Wauseon stand out Kyle Storrer, who had Wauseon basketball fans having flashbacks of his high school days, nailing three pointers and driving effortlessly to the hoop. Mark Britsch, Virtual Academy Instructor, used his size and athletic ability to his advantage and surprised some with his range, hitting a couple three pointers of his own. The game was close the whole way but the spark for the Thunder came when 7th Grade Intervention Specialist and 7th Grade Boys Basketball Coach Jeff Mazurowski turned the hustle on, grabbing three steals and diving for a loose ball, all in a span of about 20 seconds, giving the Wauseon Thunder both a boost and a laugh I think that turned the tide for us! said Principal Leatherman. As the clock ticked down to all zeroes, the student section made sure to thank the crew for coming out, chanting Thank You 13. All in all, the night was full of entertaining action, a great sense of community, and of course fund raising for the Junior class. Mitchell Peebles may be reached at [email protected]

Wauseon Junior High Wrestlers Join The Varsity In Bringing Home State Gold
YOUNGSTOWN: March 8, 2014 Judging by the results of the Ohio Athletic Committee State Wrestling Tournament, the Wauseon Indians Varsity Wrestling Team will not be rebuilding in the futurethey will be reloading. For the second time in as many years, a Wauseon Indian has taken home a State Wrestling Championship. In 2013, Zane Krall brought home a championship in the Varsity 220 pound class. This year the gold went to Wauseon Junior High grappler Sandro Ramirez, who took out Colt Yinger of Nelsonville York by technical fall to win the 120 pound weight class. As Wauseon Varsity Head Coach Mike Ritter reported, 8th grader, Sandro Ramirez (120 lbs) became Wauseons first Junior High State Wrestling Champion at the 16th annual Ohio Athletic Committee (OAC) State Wrestling Tournament at the Covelli Center on the campus of Youngstown State University. Unlike the High School State Tournament, the OAC State Wrestling Tournament is one Division. It is not separated by school size into the 3 Division like High School. In addition, the OAC Junior High Tournament uses a 64-man bracket compared to a 16-man bracket at the High School Tournament. Coming in as a District Champion, Ramirez scored a technical fall and a fall to advance to the quarterfinals. Ramirez defeated Jake Thompson of Cincinnati Moeller to advance to the semi-finals against Jake Marsh from Marysville. In a hard fought battle, Ramirez controlled the match and advanced to the finals to wrestle Nelsonville Yorks Colt Yinger. Ramirez dominated the finals match, defeating Yinger by technical fall to win the State Title. Ramirez was not the only Wauseon wrestler making positive inroads at the State level though. Coach Ritter continued, 8th grader Hunter Yackee (132 lbs) became Wauseons second 3rd place finisher by wrestling an outstanding tournament in his own right. Like Ramirez, Yackee also advanced to the quarterfinals with 2 impressive wins, then advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Connor Beard of Lakewood St. Edward. Yackees title run ended with a semi-final loss to Ryan Thomas of St. Paris Graham, who was the eventual champion of the weight class. Yackee bounced back well in the consolation semifinal match with a win to put him in the consolation finals for 3rd and 4th. In the consolation finals, he was again matched up with Connor Beard of St. Eds and scored a late takedown to win the match and secure 3rd place. 8th grader Alex Sosa (249 lbs) placed 8th at the tournament, Coach Ritter said. Alex won his first round match, but lost his next match before the quarterfinals. He then put together 3 consecutive wins to put himself in the placement round. He lost a tight match in the consolation quarterfinals to put him in the 7th and 8th place match. Again, it was a tight battle, but Alex came up just short but still came away with an 8th place finish. Coach Ritter concluded, saying, Six other Wauseon Junior High Wrestlers wresters also qualified and competed over the weekend. 7th graders, Tristan Barajas, Gavin Ritter, and Xavier Torres along with 8th graders, Alex Slattman, Mauricio Barajas, and Colton Blanton. All wrestled very well and won matches, just not quite enough matches to earn placement. The group of 7th graders will make another run at it next year, while the group of 8th graders will advance to the high school to make a run at qualification and placement at the High School State Tournament. This group of wrestlers, along with the current group at the high school will be very fun to watch over the next several years.
WRESTLING AWARD ... Wauseon Wrestling Awards were presented Monday night. Taking home hardware were (from left) Wade Hodges, Tre Campbell, and Aaron Schuette. Schuette, who gathered in four awards, got an assist from coach Mike Ritter to hold his trophies.

Parker Ruffer Of Stryker Takes The BBC Top Spot As 2013-14 Player Of The Year
The office of BBC Commissioner Randy Bachman has announced that Parker Ruffer of Stryker is the 2013-14 BBC Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Anybody stunned by that announcement please signify by raising your hand. Uh huh, pretty much what I expected nobody. It is not that often that you find a big guy who is a throwback to the center play of Bill Laimbeer. Ruffer knows that when the shot goes up, he is the man that needs to clear the lane for a rebound. He also knows all points of low-post play, both offensively and defensively. What makes him a Laimbeer-type player is that while the ball is being brought down court and his defender is turning around in the paint to await his arrival, Ruffer will get the ball outside of the arch and rain down threes over guards who can only defend his armpits. The Big Panther didnt rake in over 400 points last season by asking nicely; he dominatedplain and simple. The list of All-BBC selections from the office of the BBC Commissioner is as follows 2013-14 Boys BBC Player of the Year Parker Ruffer of Stryker All-BBC First Team Clayton Ferguson North Central Korben Rychener Pettisville Jacob Brown Edon Tyler Cox Fayette Chandler Sanford Fayette All-BBC Second Team Jeremy Mann Pettisville Dean Beamont Stryker Tanner Clingaman Stryker Brock Thiel Edon Quinn Smith Hilltop All-BBC Honorable Mention Dylan Hutchison North Central Chase Legacy North Central Branden Turner North Central Austin Dykstra Pettisville Brannan Woolace Stryker Mike Peeples Edon Kaden Sapp Edon Koby Biddix Fayette Tim Maneval Hilltop
